There are hundreds of thousands of children in adoption centers in the world that need a good and loving home and family. Each year many of them are adopted into their "ideal" home and their lives are forever changed. Throughout the years, adoption was only granted to a couple, which was ideally portrayed as marriage between a man and woman; however, there has been a recent increase of homosexual couple who have expressed the desire to adopt and raise a child in the same manner that their heterosexual counterparts do. There is major controversy surrounding this subject as many different views over it have continued to surface. Many people have posed questions such as; should they be able to adopt? What will happen to the children? Will they …show more content…
Children who are in the adoption process have, typically, already been through many difficulties in their previous homes. Many of them have been through both physical and mental abuse, divorce, family death, and many other varying causal situations. Not only are they carrying the memory of these different situations with them, but now they are having to relocate to a new home where they are entirely unfamiliar. Many of these children want to leave their past behind and move forward to begin to live with a family who cares for them and will show them with utmost comfort. However, this may not be the case when moving into a homosexual home. The children will be even more emotionally disoriented when seeing two mom or two dads. Not only will they be brought to a totally new home with two same-sex parents, but they will also live with parents who are also emotionally unbalanced. Research shows that “lesbians…in [a] sample were significantly more likely to have mental health problems and report self-injury and suicide” (Kerr). This finding serves to show just how lesbians are predisposed to having high percentages of hurting themselves due to various reasons. It also supports the idea that homosexuals have major stressors in life due to their sexual appeals and this can be a major disadvantage when adopting a child. If lesbian women cause themselves injuries or even …show more content…
There are many ways in which religion can come into the opposition of homosexual adoption. A prime example in the fact that a majority of the nation are born with the Christian belief as their primary religious faith and this belief does not agree with the joining of two same-sex individuals. An example of this can be seen in an article written over the suicide of a gay man named Zach Harrington. Mr. Harrington killed himself after being in a city council meeting which greatly disagreed with homosexuality. The article highlighted the statement by the city council that “as they saw it, [even] the very creator of the universe stood against homosexuality so strongly” (Reitan). This is a common belief of the Christian faith, and though more and more church associations continue to have discussions regarding the possibility of permitting same-sex marriage, there has not been an amendment to the global Christian belief that the practice of homosexuality is indeed sinful. Not only is the majority of the people in the nation Christian and share the belief that that homosexuality is a sin, but some of the children in adoption centers are also Christians. How would they react when being brought into a home in which they view the sexual orientation of their adopted parents to be sinful? Many children were raised conservatively which has subsequently led them to have certain beliefs and a

Adoption implies an opportunity to be desired, adored, and appreciated despite the flaws you have, removing the misery of living alone and placing the blissful feelings of being surrounded by a family. Annually, thousands of children enter the foster care system and wait with anticipation for their chance of having a family again. According to UNICEF, the number of orphans globally in 2008 was approximated to be 132 million orphans. Lastly the divorce and all the drama that goes on between parents shouldn’t have anything to do with the child afterwards, only the part about who gets custody of the child, but even then those matters should be discussed behind closed doors. The only states that accept same-sex couples to jointly adopt children are Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, D.C., Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Massachusetts, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Vermont, and Washington. Various religions across the country consider marriage only between a male and female therefore, the option to adopt a child is also considered a sin for same-sex couples. In the Constitution, the first amendment states, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion.” Religion is not a factor that the judicial system can target to hold same-sex couples from adopting children. Courts systems express their concern of molestation in the household of a child raised by parents of the same sex, fearing that the child will be raped or touched by a parent.…

An estimated 100,000 kids linger in foster care centers around the United States. Same-sex couples are dominating a large portion of the population that hope to adopt, but still continue to face many obstacles on their quest to do so. Because the Supreme Court voted to make gay marriage legal nationwide in 2015, this aids in same-sex couples being allowed to adopt from foster care agencies instead of through private, gay-friendly adoption agencies. However, homosexual couples continue to face difficulties in adopting in states that have laws to limit joint adoption to a husband and wife (Beitsch). Research shows evidence that gay and lesbian couples are more likely to adopt foster care children that typically belong to groups that are least likely to get adopted.…
