“For as far back as I can remember, I’ve felt depressed but until I was sixteen I didn’t know it had a name. I thought it was just life.” Those were the words of Erin, a woman who was officially diagnosed with major depression as a teen. Like many teens who live with this serious illness, she attempted to kill herself more than once. (Erin) In America alone one in 10 students in high school have attempted to commit suicide. Also, almost one in six people, in America between the ages 12 and 17 have at least seriously considered killing themselves. (“Statistics about Youth Suicide.") But, why is this the case? You know, crying and stuff. Does that, like, mean I have depression?’ In a short answer, no. Depression is way more complicated than that. There is an enormous difference between sadness and depression. For one thing, sadness is an average emotion you feel on a day-to-day basis. People can feel sad when an ice cream cone falls on the pavement or when no one can show up to a party you worked really hard on. Like every emotion, people feel it for a bit, then it ends, and they go on with their lives. For depression, however, people have the emotion of sadness constantly. Depressed people tend to have excessive fatigue, feelings of worthlessness, loss of interest in activities or hobbies they once loved, apathy, overeating or undereating. There’s Sylvia Path, Demi Lovato, Owen Wilson, the list goes on. In the end, I decided to choose Nina Simone because of how tragic, yet power her story was to me. From the documentary What Happened, Miss Simone? Nina Simone her entire life had suffered hard ships from the moment she was born. At a young age she would seclude herself from the other children and play piano in hopes of going to Julliard to study classical music. Ridiculed by her race and lack of money to pay for the tuition, she left. When she started her career in jazz and blues, she was at the height of her life. She was married, had a daughter, performing in large venues and everything seemed perfect. The only problem was that she was physically abused by her husband. Years of this lead to her becoming the physical and mental abuser to her daughter, Lisa.
