Carrie Fisher's Appropriate Role Model

Improved Essays
Now in days it could be a hard to find a suitable role model. The celebrity world is always corrupted with lies and scandals; it is always hard to find a person who is upfront and honest to the people. Most people don’t want the next Kardasian to be their role model, if anything they would want someone who can show them it is okay not to be okay. Carrie Fisher showed people everywhere it was okay not to be okay. She battled mental health issues and drug addiction and was open about it. Fisher wrote 4 books and 3 memoirs being brutally honest about her life, her affairs, mental health and drug addiction. It was this honesty which made her one of the most trusted public figures in Hollywood. She wasn’t just a princess in a gold bikini, nor Jake Blues’s psycho ex-girlfriend, she was and will always …show more content…

“If you claim something, you can own it, but if you have it as a shameful secret, you’re f*****.”-Carrie Fisher Carrie Fisher learned to be herself. She became a hero and an icon. She knew what she wanted when she wanted it. To most people she is princess Leia in Star Wars. To others she’s Mystery Girl in Blues Brothers. Some may know her as Marie from When Harry Met Sally, or even Janie from Drop Dead Fred. To me she is not a princess or a psycho ex-girlfriend, but a woman who was extraordinary. We lost Ms. Carrie Fisher October 27, 2016. An icon in this world and the next. One bodacious soul who fought her demons and continues still to help people open up about addiction. Cruella de Vil is not typically considered to be a great role model, but if one puts aside the fact she stole the dogs and admits that making clothes out of animals has been common practice since people first walked the earth, they would realise that Ms. De Vil has several traits that children could learn from, including perseverance and self-confidence???. What she did right was show determination in accomplishing her dreams and a willingness to get her hands dirty doing so. In this day and age, conformity is what decides who people are and what their future will look like. Normally when people think of conformity, the negative connotations associated with the word come to mind. Carrie Fisher, with at least 41 movies under her belt, Princess Leia being her crowning glory and most memorable, wrote in her play ‘Wishful Drinking’ that “no matter how I go, I want it reported that I drowned in moonlight, strangled by my own bra.” This perfectly outlines the person she was; funny and kind-hearted. While acting may have been her most publicized occupation, that is not all we have to admire her for. She was a talented novel and play-write, her most recent novel published only 5 weeks before her tragic death, detailing her years during the filming of Star Wars. She was an incredible activist, using her star power to further women's, animal and LGBTQIA+ rights, contributing financially to various AIDS and HIV organizations.…

In the articles, “In Defense of Liz Lemon” by Emily Nussbaum and “The Fashion Industry: Free to Be an Individual” by Hannah Berry, both discuss how women can choose to step out of the typical stereotype on how women should be portrayed and be who they truly want to be. For centuries, there has been an unspoken code on how women should act, dress, and behave. However, through the years women have started to step out of those roles to embrace who they are truly are. Considering that women are becoming more powerful and successful than ever before, one would have to agree that women no longer stand in the shadows of men in the workplace or at home. Women are now becoming more comfortable in who they are by showing their personality and confidence in the way they act, dress and communicate to others.…

One point in Malcolm Gladwell’s book that stood out to me was when he talked about the artist in Paris in 1860 and how they didn’t conform, which I think you shouldn’t. He quoted historian Sue Roe when she wrote, “works were expected to be microscopically accurate, properly ‘finished’ and formally framed, with proper perspective and all the familiar artistic conventions (pg. 66),” but the artists he wrote about didn’t follow those rules. His book is about underdogs but, when he wrote about the artists and how they were painting different than what was liked back then, I thought it was more about how the underdogs of the time didn’t conform to society. He wrote, “the Impressionists had an entirely different idea about what constituted art.…
