Argumentative Essay: Gun Control Doesn T Kill People

Improved Essays
Guns have the potential to lead to serious injury and even death. As children, most everyone is taught to be cautious with and generally stay clear from them. The perceived danger and apparent threat of firearms leads people to believe that guns have no place in today’s society. This panic over guns leads to the proposition of policies of controlling, banning, and even taking guns from the people. It is debatable whether or not these policies could help prevent the threat of guns becoming reality. Although guns very well do have the potential to be used in dangerous and irresponsible ways, the harsh reality is that gun control is not realistic. Controlling, banning, and taking the people’s guns is unconstitutional, dangerous, and not an effective …show more content…
Guns can be used for self-protection, hunting, target shooting, competition, etc. Taking away guns would eliminate all these activities and forms of protection from these law-abiding citizens: “… studies have found that Americans use guns defensively between 830,000 and 2.45 million times per year,” (Burrus). Guns are not only ever used for harm; many people use their guns to defend their family and themselves. If these people did not have guns to protect themselves, the death toll would be way higher. The people of the United States of America have the right to enjoy their time shooting targets, hunting, as well as being able to defend themselves with their guns. People can use different guns in different ways. For example, hunting rifles are used for hunting, semi automatic assault rifles for home defense, small handguns for concealed carry (defense in public), etc. Concealed carry is commonly argued about because it can very easily be used dangerously. Concealed carry allows people to carry guns in public, without others knowing, incase of situations where self-defense is needed. The certain states that have permitted concealed carry have not seen an increase in crime, but the people carrying have been able to protect themselves (Burrus). If people couldn’t protect themselves, it would be hard to imagine how much easier it would be for criminals to act. With the people hopeless in these types of situations, criminals can do whatever they want without

In order for gun control to be implemented, laws need to passed. Such laws would include mandatory background checks for the purchase of a firearm, a ban of handguns, or a ban of gun accessories like high capacity magazines and silencers. With the apparently recent rise of gun violence, some Americans blame guns and the lack of gun control for these acts of gun violence. Notably, gun control advocates argue that laws need to be implemented to prevent such atrocities; as there are many people who want gun control to implemented, there are just as many people who claim some of these laws are unconstitutional, ineffective and may only allow for more gun violence in the near future. Indeed, the implementation of Gun Control faces extreme opposition from flatlined gun violence rates, powerful lobby groups, the potential for guns to save lives, and the economic/social importance of guns.…

Society has been split into two over whether or not guns should be banned, but there needs to be a solution where both parties can be happy. Anti-gun advocates present reasoning why guns should be banned. McMahan’s main two arguments of why guns should be banned: one, guns in the community creates a more dangerous environment; and two, the police have less of a power to protect citizens when society has guns (Shafer-Landau, The Ethical Life (EL) 390). McMahan explains that communities are not going to be free of crimes with more people carrying around guns, because criminals will be more prepared, efficient, and quicker to grab and shoot their target (Shafer-Landau, EL 392-392). People with guns will be safer than people without guns, because they do not have a gun to protect themselves.…

Unfortunately, with all of the mass shootings and killings being reported by the media, guns are given a bad reputation. Sadly, many people believe that they should be illegal because they are dangerous and can kill people, but what these people don’t realize is making them illegal will do a lot more harm than good.
