I went to Sterling Surgical Hospital for an abdominal ultrasound. The Ultrasound Technologist name is Shannon Risher. During the ultrasound I asked Shannon if I could talk to her right after we were done with my ultrasound. Shannon said, “She would be glad to!”…
On Friday, we spoke about some current events. One of them was that on September 20th, the state of Georgia executed a woman for the first time since 1945. Also, Hurricane Joaquin was affecting the east coast of the United States. Next, we were divided into groups to exchange and peer edit our perfect paragraph, whose topic was “Who is responsible for William’s death?” The three things we had to be aware of were clarity, the selection of quotes, and consistency.…
My Summary of “Florida’s Farmers Look At Irma’s Damage: ‘Probably The Worst We’ve Seen’” In “Florida’s Farmers Look At Irma’s Damage: ‘ Probably The Worst We’ve Seen’”, Dan Charles explains the effects of Irma on Florida’s agriculture. To emphasise his points, Charles provides readers with a great deal of statistics and details. For example, he notes how over half of the citrus crop, a quarter of the sugar crop, and a tenth of vegetables were lost along with supplies necessary to grow these crops. In addition, he notes how such losses will also affect those immigrant workers during harvest season by reducing job opportunities and housing.…
August 17th, 2017 was when it all started, but it wasn’t until August 25th when Harvey decided to take a shot at Texas. The nation was shocked by the highest winds of 130 mph, the 84 confirmed deaths, and the thousands of homes destroyed. Why did Harvey develop into something so destructive? In “Hurricane Harvey : Why Is It So Extreme?”, Mark Fischetti successfully explained the science behind how and why Hurricane Harvey became so powerful and destructive in Texas to the public, from a natural science perspective.…
In the report, “Catastrophe in the Gulf”, the author, Dante A. Ciampaglia informs the readers of the damage Hurricane Harvey had given Texas. Category 4 hurricane Harvey hit Texas late night on Friday 25, 2017, leaving the citizens with a massive devastation of 20 maybe even 50 inches of rain flood that destroyed multiple houses. Luckily on Saturday morning, hurricane Harvey descended down to a Category 1 hurricane. It got stuck between to high pressure areas while trying to move toward the northeast and landed right over Houston.…
Katrina and Harvey left houses all over the region without power and tens of thousands of homes were either damaged or destroyed in their midst, but in the end, Harvey and Katrina brought the country together in a way that only natural disasters…
March 26, 2018 To: Ellen Cohen, Mayor Pro-Tem of Houston City Council From: Janet Asante, Chief Environmental Science officer for the Houston Health Department Re: Urban Houston Communities Suffering from Pollution after Hurricane Harvey Background and History: Hurricane Harvey is the first hurricane to hit the Texas coast since Ike in 2008 and the first major hurricane to hit Texas since Brett in 1999. Houston, which was founded on the banks of the Buffalo Bayou in 1836 and rises barely above sea level, has long been susceptible to flooding. 4All of this rainfall caused catastrophic drainage issues and made rivers rise greatly.2 Houston is essentially two cities right now: the part that was open for business two weeks after the storm and…
Harvey wasn’t thought to be as dangerous as it was due to the category 4 rating and the low wind speed, it was not expected to flood and cause massive damage in that regard due to the fact that Texas is actually above sea level unlike New Orleans in Louisiana. The flooding had somewhere to go despite there being almost no flood resistance in Houston. In New Orleans, the city is below sea level so the area that it is in really should be underwater. The systems that are designed to keep water out of the city were not built to code and were not taken seriously, the improper construction of the levees made it very easy for the city to flood and cause massive damage to property. The boats in the canals broke loose and would ride on top of the waves acting like battering rams against buildings causing even more damage to structures.…
The main cause of death was not having medical supply, or food, or water for days while being trapped in the city. “It was the largest displacements of a population since the great depression. 20,000 people were stuffed into the super dome where they had no plumbing, food to feed 10,000 for three days, and a very limited water supply. Fema, federal emergency management agency’s, job is to do exactly what their name says, manage emergencies. Yet when this disaster happened the national, state, and local governors were too busy pointing fingers at who's responsibility it really is to take action.…
For hurricane Irma, I had to evacuate Cape Canaveral and go to my father's house in Ocala. I am very thankful I did because a tornado swept pass on the street across from mine, and many of my neighbors lost their roofs completely. My house had roof damage in the room I use as my art studio. There were some leaks which messed up some artworks in progress. I am thankful though that it is all the damage and not anything more because I know a lot of people went through a lot worse.…
Imagine you and family sitting at home, watching a calm New York Mets baseball game on TV. Suddenly you realize there is a massive wall of water near your neighborhood. Then, you turn and look then all you see is glass flying everywhere. Hurricane Andrew was the time in August 1992, when a tropical wave near Africa, moved to the Atlantic Ocean. Then, the winds reached hurricane levels.…
On February 28th. 2016, Leonardo DiCaprio won his first Oscar for the movie The Relevant. Before he concluded his acceptance speech, he made a very powerful statement that left the audience speechless. “Making The Revenant was about man's relationship to the natural world. A world that we collectively felt in 2015 as the hottest year in recorded history.…
A hurricane, by definition, is a tropical cyclone with strong winds spiraling inward and upward and speeds ranging from 75 mph to 200 mph. Hurricanes emerge from the Atlantic basin, which consists of the Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea, Gulf of Mexico, the northeastern Pacific Ocean, and, less often, the central north Pacific Ocean. Most hurricanes follow a similar cycle of development. Some may run their course in as little as a day or as long as a month. They weaken and are transformed into extratropical cyclones after prolonged contact with the colder ocean waters of the middle latitudes, and they rapidly decay after moving over land areas.…
“Electrical lines and phone lines were down across the city, cutting off communication between victims and rescue workers” (Palser 34). Many people had called before the lines had been cut off, but nobody had come to their rescue. Hospitals lost electricity and could not use any medical equipment. Temperatures in the hospitals reached over 110 degrees Fahrenheit and people began to die. People were trying to reach family members in other states and cities to see if they were safe but had no form of communications to reach these people.…
