Humans are continuously working on researches that can make their life better. Technologies are the product of those researches. After many researchers’ dedications, technologies have become very advanced in modern days. From simply a cell phone to a complex satellite, humans’ lives are becoming more convenient because of the technologies. However, as the convenience that technologies have brought began to blend into humans’ lives, many negative effects also start to emerge. Nicholas Carr, the writer of Is Google Making Us Stupid, has shown that how technologies have made people lose their ability to concentrate. Sherry Turkle, a professor of social science and technology at MIT, has shown that how technologies have broken the relations between people. In my perspective, technologies are drugs that have been devastating humans’ lives by making humans stupid and causing people to lose the ability to interact with others. Technologies have caused humans to become stupid by making them lose the ability to concentrate. The efficiency that technologies have brought is the cause of the problem. Before internet was invented, people search information in libraries for days. However, after internet appears, it only takes a minute for people to get the information they need. After a long term of usage, people start to lose their ability to focus on a reading to find information. Bruce Friedman, who blogs regularly about the use of computers in medicine, said, “I now have almost totally lost the ability to read and absorb a longish article on the web or in print (Carr 316).” Basically, Friedman is saying that he cannot concentrate during reading after a long term usage of internet. Scholars have even made an experiment to show the phenomenon. Scholars from University College London offer various kinds of written information, such as ebooks, journal articles, and websites, for people to read. After the experiment, the scholars concluded that people who look on websites tend to have a skimming activity, which means that they cannot deep read when looking at websites, or technology. (316). Thus, technologies are making humans stupid by causing them to lose their ability to concentrate. On the other hand, there are people who disapprove the idea that technology is making us stupid.
