There is a lot of controversy over the topic of if humans are still evolving. Some people say that humans are still evolving, while others say we are devolving. I believe that we as humans are continuing to evolve because of medical advancements. A background term that you may not know is selective pressure; any action that changes the behavior or fitness or a living organism in a certain environment. In this paper I will be using the research of other scientists and people to prove that humans are still continuing to evolve because of medical advancements. My points are because of medical advancements we are living longer lives. My second point is some people say that because of medical advancements they weak don't die. So people are say that we are not evolving. However, we might be evolving in a different way.
Point 1: Humans are Living Longer Lives because of Medical Advancements
One way medical advancements are helping human continue to evolve is medicine and vaccines have helped us live longer lives. Humans no longer have to compete for every resource to live, and one of the big reasons in that is medical advancements (AAAS,2005). Why medical advancements are helping us to evolve is selective pressure are no longer on us constantly to see who is weak and will die. Who is strong and will survive and live longer lives. Medicine and vaccines have slowly taken that away making us live longer lives (Tattersall,2005). For example the small pox plague hit Boston in the spring of 1721.By the end of that year half of 11,000 people living in Boston had contracted small pox. Simple precautions did not work and 844 people had died. A man named Cotton Mather had pleaded with doctors to give the people the vaccine however they thought that it would continue to spread the viruses. There was a controversy over this matter and by the end 242 people had gotten the vaccine and only 6 had died. By the turn of the 18th century the small pox vaccine was invented by a man name Edward Jenner. Now nearly 200 years later the World Health Organization has said that small pox has been destroyed(Beaty,2015).Overall this shows that because of medical advancements it has helped us eradicate many different plagues and diseases that would have prevented us from living long lives. To be able to live a long relatively healthy life. Point 2: Evolving Different because of Medical Advancements Some people say that because of medical advancements the weak no longer die. Some are led to believe that we are not evolving anymore. However, we could be evolving in a different way. People who live in the Himalayas live in an environment where it does not have as much oxygen as we do because of the altitude they live in …show more content…
That has allowed us to evolve but just at a slower rate or differently. My second point is related to my argument because of medical advancements the weak don’t die. So people immediately suspect that we are not evolving. However, if you look at it we could be evolving in a different way because of these medical advancements or they could just be helping us to continue to evolve. Furthermore, I believe that we as humans are still evolving but just differently than other animals now because we are the only species that has the access to resources that can help us progress and still evolve with the help of medical
