What makes us who we are? That question has been asked a lot lately, and now it is time for it to be answered. Many things develop who a person is, it could be the person’s name because they’ve been called that their whole life. It could also be their life experiences because a person could have experienced something that changes their perspective on life which determines who they are, or even the people they are around like family for example, family influences other family members, this can affect every person’s life.

In the graphic novel called Anya’s Ghost, it explains how life experiences affect what makes a person them. Anya, the main character, has a life experience that affects things about herself. When Ayna moved out of Russia and into the United States, she became a different person. What she experienced in that year of school rubbed off on her. Anya was so crazy about a guy, she was always dieting because she thought she was ‘fat’ and she smoked because her best friend did and also because she was ‘stressed out.’ That all changed when she met this ghost, the ghost started to change her and make herself into a person she was not. When Anya realized what her ghost was doing, Anya started to change the way she acted. She accepted the kind of person she was, she did not try and change herself. Another reason why life experiences are so important in this topic is because of this poem called “Dusting” by Julia Alvarez. The speaker in the poem explains that when she lived with her mother, her mother followed their culture, where women are expected to be domestic. From the speaker's experience of her mother doings, she eknew she didn’t want to be that way, it affected her future and what the speaker wanted to do. The last life experience was about my life experience that changed the person who I am today. When I was younger my parents divorced, and that left me with my mother and my siblings. The way I was raised made me who I am. Now I have moved in with my dad and he has different expectations for me, but from being raised by my mother for most of my life I disagree with his expectations. If I was raised by my dad my life would have been so much more
