Anna Howard Shaw was born on February 14, 1847, in Newcastle upon Tyne, Northumberland. At the age of 72, Shaw died in Moylan, Pennsylvania, July 2, 1919. She became a preacher, doctor, and a women's right activist, what was depressing was that she died one year before the 19th amendment-The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex.
She immigrated to the United States with her family in 1851. She began a lifetime of hard work at 12 years old. Shaw’s father left most of his family alone in Michigan. She stepped in to preserve her land when her older brother got sick.
In her young adulthood she attended high school while living with her sister in Big Rapids, Michigan. She was insistent on going to college. She started to preach at this time too, her family disapproved. She did it anyway, …show more content…
Although the New England Conference and the General Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church refused to ordain her because she was a woman, Shaw became the first female minister ordained by the Methodist Protestant Church.” Whole paragraph is www.biography.org
Her important contributions consist of giving up being a preacher and to lecture and support the women’s right movement. In 1888, she devoted her mind only to women’s right suffrage. She served as the vice president of the National American Woman Suffrage Association from 1892 to 1904, and as president to 1904 to 1915. During WW1, she headed the Women's Committee of the Council of National Defense. She received the Distinguished Service Medal in 1919 for her wartime service.
