Anna Deavere Smith's Letters To A Young Artist

Improved Essays
Many people express themselves using art. Everyone has a different story behind their artwork and construct it differently. Nonetheless, knowledge and empathy are a key part in the process of creating wonderful art.
To create great art, an artist needs knowledge because the more background knowledge the artist has, the more their mind is widened to a greater imagination and it’s easier to put out what they’re thinking. Some people might say that it doesn’t take anything to create lasting art. However, knowledge can help take artist’s craft to a whole new level. Anna Deavere Smith, author of Letters to a Young Artist explained, “I am a firm believer in crossing generations to find mentorship and inspiration and a sense of furthering the craft.

The vast spectrum of knowledge, skills obtained, and experiences from a college degree more than compensates for the monetary cost of tuition. Creating art is my passion; I have always wanted to become a great artist ever since I was a child drawing on my walls and copying pictures from books. I have devoted my life to improving my talents by illustrating my own stories, practicing drawing daily, and challenging myself to earning my own money doing what I love by drawing commissions. Learning how to communicate through illustration is a valuable skill that will live with me for the rest of my life and progressing my artist career.…

A person’s identity is something that is very personal and is hard to describe and express to other people. Some people prefer to be identified by their physical characteristics, whereas others would rather be identified by their personality and how they are as a person. Knowing the difference between the two is one of the hardest things to do when you first meet someone. The same thing applies to art when trying to capture the identity of the artist. One’s identity can be defined by their experiences, ethnicity, religion, values, childhood, family background, among many other factors that make up a person’s identity.…

The mechanisms the members of this museum and art educators use to interact with its audience is through the question-answer process. That process means to identify the relations between what an artwork represents and the reality of the world. For example, the way the art educators would want to start this process is to ask a question, “What do you see?”(129) the purpose of this is to begin to allow the audience to dig deep within the contents of an artwork. Beyond the appearance and visuality, the act of interpreting requires a knowledge of its cultural background. For this reason, the language used between the art educators and its students in this community is essential because art educators share many ways to begin…

A brush on a canvas, pencil to paper. Soft, smooth strokes help create an image of a starry night, a lady who mysteriously smiles, or even a peaceful wooden footbridge in the awake of a magnificent water lily pond. Every artist tells a story through their masterpiece but in order to do so, the artist must be motivated and inspired to create. In the book, Drive, Daniel H. Pink investigates what motivates an individual and how it affects human society. As a result, Pink, as well as others, can come to a consensus that often times, people create something for either the psychological or personal pleasure of the act.…

Art Project Synthesis Art is so subjective, interpreting it is up to the individual, and the artist puts their soul into the project, truly not knowing how it will be received. This was not a comfortable project for me, and was difficult to follow through on. The subject of War and the Soul is difficult enough, but to put one’s feelings and thoughts into artwork, for others to see and frankly judge, this is difficult. At first I was excited about the project of bringing a message through art, except I have no art experience! Decorating cakes, working with sugar to create pieces…

Each minute detail must be reflected in the painting. In order to achieve this, artists strive to account for every bump, crease and shadow. Thus, observation is a key component in art.…

If one cannot communicate, how can one expect any piece of art to withstand the tests of time? To inspire and to move people centuries after publication? Communication is the most important factor in determining the trajectory of artistic creation. This applies to artists all across the board; it is the only “rule” I believe can be applied to the ever-changing objectivity of art. Performers, musicians, writers and visual artists alike are said to “breathe life” into their mediums.…

Freedom is having the right to act, speak, or think as one wants, and having absolute freedom in creating art pieces mean that no one or no authority can censor it. Usually, authorities such as the government tend to censor art pieces at which they deem unfit and unsuitable for the public audience. The act of censoring is unfair for the artists, as it may mean that they do not have the freedom of expression through art, defeating the purpose of the artwork due to the removal of the main items of the art piece. Some artworks may even be censored either partially or totally although the artist did not have the intention to send whichever inappropriate message the authority has inferred from the art piece. However, sometimes authorities do have to censor, which some adults may disapprove of.…
