As Mr. Shiftlet drove into Mobile, he was in search of more money. He was looking for another farm to work on to continue his mischief and steal people’s money. He wandered into an old tavern with a lot of people looking to buy some drinks, look for advertisements for jobs, and talk to people to find out who the rich people were in town. He stumbled upon this older gentleman sitting at the bar by himself. He introduced himself and Shiftlet bought him a drink. After an hour of talking and three drinks later Shiftlet found out all he needed to know. The old man said, “There is an old couple south of town with a huge farm that they can’t keep up anymore and they are in search of a farm hand. They are also very wealthy.” Shiftlet knew he couldn’t …show more content…
He strolled up and walked to the door and knocked. They answered and said hello. Shiftlet explained how he was looking for a job and the couple seemed to like him. Their names’ were James and Mary Small. He said, “I have had many jobs including a gospel singer, a foreman on the railroad, an assistant for an undertaking parlor, and that he worked for the radio. James said, “We’d be glad to give you a job.” “You can stay out in the barn, for there is a room above in the loft with running water and electricity. Shiftlet didn’t really go to bed and when he knew they were asleep he got up and started searching for their loot. He first looked in the barn and he came up empty handed. He then sneaked inside the house and started in there. He immediately went to the Small’s bedroom. The couple tossed and turned but didn’t wake up to Shiftlet’s noise. He went to the closet and sure enough there it was. It was a safe. He needed the key and had no clue where to look so he tried guessing the combination. After many tries he came up empty. He looked in Mary’s end table but nothing. Then he looked in James’s table. There was a bible, glasses, books, and other miscellaneous stuff. He pulled out the bible which was on the bottom and there it fell. The key fell out on the wooden floor and made a clatter. James Small quickly arose from his bed but Shiftlet was hiding under it at that point. After some time he fell back asleep and Shiftlet came out. He went straight to the safe and opened it up. There was the loot, about $500,000 stuffed to the top of the case. He grabbed a suitcase that was in the closet and packed it full of the money. He made a quick escape from their bedroom without awakening them. He ran straight to his car and as he went to reach for the door handle he was shot. Bang! Bang! Shiftlet was shot on the spot by Lucynell, with her daughter standing behind her. His blood sprayed on the car door and dripped down to the bag full of money.

Much of the symbolism used is God telling Shiftlet that he needs to find redemption. Shiftlet as a repairman illustrates how he views himself as someone who needs to fix others. As O’Connor narrates “He felt too that a man with a car had a responsibility to others and he kept his eye out for a hitch-hiker”.…
