Andrew Mcelroy: High School Stereotypes

Decent Essays
There are many stereotypes that float around a high school atmosphere. The major high school stereotype would be the easy girl that flirts with all the guys. She will always be hanging out with a large group of boys. She befriends them all, but she jumps from one boy to the next boy. Andrew McElroy made a comment that it is easy to have a seuxal relationship with me.
To begin with, I try my hardest to be nice to everyone, and I understand that it may come off as flirting to some people. I hang out with my friends which happen to be mostly guys. I just try to make good impressions on everyone I meet and spend time with, and I do not mean to get feelings involved in our relationships. Andrew and I became friends and he developed feelings for

My School district I’ve been in since halfway through kindergarten has one high school, two junior highs, a couple of middle schools and a variety of elementary schools; the fire trucks for the town have the high school mascot on the side. Small town education is different in the way that honor classes have a set of students that take them, and there is rarely a variation from this set of students in those classes. I saw that many students who did not start honors classes in junior high do not think that they can take these advanced classes, they have become viewed as “elite”. My sophomore year history teacher that year agreed with me that the view needed to be changed, so she sponsored a club we headed named “AP Ambassadors”. “AP Ambassadors”…

The Breakfast Club is a movie about five teenagers from different social groups that are spending a Saturday together in detention. Each of the five teenagers represents a different stereotype of high school students, you have the athlete, the nerd, the basket case, the criminal, and the princess. At the very beginning of the movie it is clear that they do not get along and want nothing to do with each other. They are given an assignment to write about why they received detention and who they think they are. As the movie progresses, each of the teenagers begins to open up to the group and they find that they are more alike than they originally thought.…

I believe that when you’re viewed in a certain perspective you start to only fit in that one perspective and the longer you’re in it, the harder it is to break free from it. I think that in the movie “The Breakfast Club” directed by John Hughes in 1992, portrays it very well. The group of kids that are in detention are John, the criminal, Brian, the brain, Claire, the princess, Andrew, the jock, and the basket case, Allison. (Hughes.1992) The plot of the movie is that a group of kids are in detention and they find ways to spend the time.…

For example, the number one stereotype that is always seen is the frat boy. These guys love to party like there is no tomorrow. Typically jocks and rich kids are a part of the fraternities, but you will also find athletes at these parties even though they are not a part of a fraternity. In the interview with Santiago, he stated that the ones that go out and party (which is quite a few) make the rest of the male population in college look bad. He also went on to explain, “People still play around like high school but you rarely see that.…

We as a people tend to look someone over upon first meeting them; based on how they dress and their first few actions towards us we then classify them into a general group, a stereotype. This can be good and bad. This can be an advantage and disadvantage. It is my intention to review four common stereotypes whose characteristics contradict one another. I will talk about the general assumptions that come with being an athlete and a member of the band.…

While high school students are multidimensional, there is a bit of truth behind each stereotype. For example, if my life were a television show I would be the nerd. I always do my homework, I'm in the honors program at my school, I worked part-time at a bookstore, I get good grades, participate in too many activities, I love Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings (and frequently quote both), and stress about each of these things. However I have more layers to me than a two-dimensional television character. For instance, I also play a varsity sport and I enjoy dancing - ballet and jazz.…

College is not just about your degree but about the things you intend to do with it after college, about the live you plan on changing. Another effect of stereotype often known as white superiority can be seen in Mrs. Gruwell’s student, Ben who is the only white student in the class. He never speaks much in fear of the other gang members in his class. He prefers to sit in the front of the classrooms as close to the teacher. In the film, he was told to sit amongst the black students saying, “I can’t go back there alone” expecting to be harassed. This subconsciously indicate how white sees the black as a form of calamity and that black, being associatied with criminality in the media may have been a number of effects on viewers. .…

Stereotype, a word that conjures up a myriad of feelings and images in ones brain. It allows people to place others into boxes, categorizing them for future reference. However, the danger here is that stereotypes do not make room for the expansion upon said boxes. Michael Pickering, a professor of media and cultural analysis at Loughborough University in the UK, expands upon this idea of stereotypes and their inflexibility in his book Stereotyping: The Politics of Representation published in 2001 by Palgrave Macmillan.…

Middle school is an inevitable phase of many of our lives. It is also a very memorable time- for both good and bad reasons. Yet, we all somehow manage to strive through no matter how tough the year gets. For me, at first, none of the typical horrifying middle school stereotypes fit how my sixth grade year was going.
