Andrew Jackson: A Great American Hero

On March 15,1767, a great American hero was born. This hero fought for the common man and did whatever it took to improve our country. This hero was Andrew Jackson. Jackson had always been tough. When he was just thirteen years old, the British kidnapped him and his brother, Robert. When the officers told him to clean their shoes, he was slashed with a sword and was left with scars. They both were diagnosed with smallpox and they were both starving. Robert eventually died and Andrew was released a bit later. Jackson conquered the disease and toughened up. Most of his family was killed at the hands of the British, so he was forced to become an orphan at the age of fourteen. Later on Jackson became a soldier and fought in many wars. He was running against Adams and it had come down to the House of Representatives to vote between Adams and Jackson. Henry Clay, a friend of Adams, told the House of Representatives to vote for Adams. He won and chose Clay as his vice president. Jackson called it a corrupt bargain. He then went on to create the Democratic Party. Jackson ran again in 1829 and won. This was the start of the Age of Jackson. Jackson chose his supporters to be his government officials. This was eventually called the spoils system, which was used by many other great presidents after him. Many farmers wanted the Indians ground because it was rich and fertile. Jackson listened to them and created the Indian Removal Act. He presented it to congress and they debated it. Eventually they approved of it and Jackson enforced it. Jackson thought this would be the best way to preserve their cultures and keep peace among the Americans and the Indians. In 1832 he was reelected. One of the last things Jackson did in his presidency was take away the banks. He believed that the banks gave money to the rich at the expense of the ordinary people.
