In ancient Greece, theatre and drama took very big parts. Drama was the way they honored their gods. The majority of the festivals were about Dionysus who is the god of grape harvest, these festivals were called City Dionysia.In this festival men used to perform songs to welcome Dionysus.These plays were only performed at the City Dionysia festival.The theatre buildings was called a theatron and most Greek cities had a theatron. The most important genres in ancient greek drama were comedy, satyr plays, and tragedies.
All of this genres are basically ritual to Dionysus. Satyr plays are the oldest sort of play. Satyrs were goatmen. Satyr was the kind of genre that provided comic relief between the heavy tragedies scene. Athenian comedy is divided into three periods, Old Comedy, Middle Comedy, and New Comedy. The most famous ancient comedy writer were Aristophanes and Menander. Tragedy dealt with themes of love, loss, pride, the abuse of power and fraught relationships between men and gods. Typically the main protagonist of a tragedy was that a person commits some terrible crime without realizing how foolish and arrogant he has been.
