Early Life Herbert Clark Hoover was born on August 10, 1874, in West Branch, Iowa. His father was Jesse Clark Hoover, the towns blacksmith, and his mother's name was Hulda Hoover, the town's teacher. His mother was very intelligent. Everyone wanted her to speak during the town meetings. Hoover’s religion was the society of friends or Quakers. His dad died when he was six, and his mom died when he was nine. Hoover, his little sister, Mary, his older brother, and Theodore moved around a lot, but final landing in Organ to live with his uncle. In school, Hoover failed all of his classes, except math. He wanted to go to Stanford. The recruiter for Stanford saw Hoover’s grades and said he could go, but he would have to take multiple summer courses, to get him caught up with all of the rest of his classes. Hoover was in the first class to go to Stanford. He went there for four years and got his degree in geology. From there Hoover would launch a successful career in mining. Professional Life One of the first things he did in his professional life became a miner. Hoover wanted to be a surveyor, but ending up work over 70 hours a week at a gold mine, near Nevada City, California. He got lucky when a company in San Francisco offered him a job. The San Francisco job let him meet with a firm in need of an engineer, to check out mines for potential purchase. Hoover went to Australia to look over this land. He traveled miles looking for land for mining. He found land that he liked, but the problem was it had already been mined. The owners had already mined the surface and declared the rest of it was worthless. Hoover thought otherwise and convinced his company to buy the land. He said he would pay his boss back and make a profit in the matter of a year. It was a huge success. The mine was still full of gold and lasted over 70 years. Hoover success took him to China, Burma, South Africa, and Russia. By 40 he was the richest self-made man of his time. President Woodrow Wilson asked Hoover to run the U.S food administration. When Harding became President, he offered his choice of Cabinet posts. Hoover chose to serve as Secretary of Commerce. The Secretary of Commerce is the head of the United States Commerce. Commerce is buying and selling, especially on a large scale. Commerce includes legal, economic, political, social, cultural, and technological systems that are in operation in any country. The Secretary of Commerce is also kinda like the teachers in a way. They help the people like the president when they are confused. Hoover was the Secretary of Commerce twice. Once in 1921-1923 under president Harding and again in 1923-1928 under President Coolidge. He raised millions of dollars for food and medicine to help the desperate Belgians.
