The kitchen. Where waves of family come in and out, always talkative but ready to listen. Their presence is warm and inviting, the compact space is comforting. She’s saying that the act of wandering no matter how far can lead to unforeseen adventures and comprehensibility that wouldn’t have been able to be accessed otherwise. The simplest of action, whether it be finding Euro gelato or pacing the kitchen floor can lead to these ‘clarifications’. She believes the leisurely journey of walking on a winding road that may wind back upon itself, but eventually reaches it’s destination, is invisible to the traveler because “walking is meandering” (Solnit 7). However in going on such a journey it opens the terrain in the mind that was closed off before. I constantly pace the floors in my kitchen with thousands of thoughts flooding my terrain.
