Firstly, Ginny Graves presents her stand clearly in the first paragraph while Ruth Whippman does not show her stand precisely making it difficult for readers to follow. In the first paragraph of Graves’s article, it suggests that “‘Happiness-real happiness-is quieter and calmer, but that sense of peace is deeply satisfying and can sustain you through life’s challenges.’ Moreover, true happiness isn’t elusive. It’s available right now” (Graves, 2017, as cited in Beck, 2002). Even though Graves quotes the words said by sociologist Martha Beck in her thesis statement, as the opinion of Beck is exactly the same as Graves’s and the quotations from experts make the stand stronger, Graves clearly express her opinion of the source of happiness. However, Whippman used a few paragraphs talking about her failure in achieving happiness on her own and focusing on criticising the opposing view of “seeking happiness within” (Whippman, 2017). Whippman only presents her stand and elaborates on her opinions in the bottom half of her article. Therefore, Graves’s article is more persuasive as she shows her stand at the beginning of her article. Secondly, Graves include various information with sources to support her opinions in happiness in her article and Whippman fails to do so. For example, the author quoted the sentence said by Susan David, PhD, author of a famous book providing the source of the book which is available on amazon.com and the price of the book was given as well to increase the credibility of the source (Grave, 2017, as cited in David, 2016). However, some information and data provided by Whippman are vague and this reduces the reliability of the text. For instance, Whippman (2017) claims that the average American spends less than an hour a day on social communication. If the source can be footnoted in the text, the reader will be able to track down and it will be more reliable. Also, the author contends that around half of meals are now eaten alone in America (Whippman, 2017). It is understandable that the anther wants to emphasise on the large percentage of one-person meal but the article may be more authentic if the …show more content…
This may make those readers with similar feeling and emotions feel connected and understood. Graves does not include any personal experience in her article so the author may not be able to build emotional connection with readers.
In a nutshell, Graves provides a wider range of information and presents concise thesis statement in her article making the article more persuasive compared to Whippman’s article. Graves also uses lighter tone to lead readers. Although Whippman does better in establishing connection with readers having similar emotions, the article from Graves is generally more persuasive in many
