Ancient Rome grew from a small town on central Italy's Tiber River into an empire that at its peak encompassed most of continental Europe, Britain, much of western Asia, northern Africa and the Mediterranean islands. Centered north of Rome, the Etruscans had ruled over the Romans for hundreds of years. Once free, the Romans established a republic, a government in which citizens elected representatives to rule. The three relevant reasons are overspending military, unemployment, and inferior technology. Those three evidences are the most important as the evidence will show.…
The Aeneid was then written in a time of great political and cultural change, as the established political order is replaced by an emperor. Ovid himself states, “...and the exiled Aeneas, the beginnings of lofty Rome: no Latin work is more famous.” (Ovid. Ars Amatoria. 3.337-38.…
Text 2: Vergil’s Aeneid, book 2.279-297 Vergil’s textual source describes Aeneas’ encounter with Hector’s ghost during the siege on Troy who warns him that Troy has fallen and is held by the enemy. Vergil’s Aeneid focuses solely on Aeneas’ travels and then on the war of Troy. Vergil’s work has several poetic features used to create a very detailed scene. In this scene, Vergil uses first-person to show Aeneas’ emotional state during this encounter; allowing the reader to increase their sense of connection with the character. This form of writing refrains the reader from making characterizations.…
The Aeneid, a long poem written by Vergil, focuses on the journey of the Trojan Aeneas and his men as they travel to found Rome. Vergil’s intricate and carefully planned writing provides a background to each character and place that the heroes encounter on their travels. In Book One, three gods; Juno, Aeolus, and Neptune; give speeches that give insight into their personalities. Juno is the queen of the gods who fears and dislikes Aeneas because he has the potential to overthrow her beloved city of Carthage. Aeolus is the god of the winds who assists Juno in attempting to throw Aeneas off course.…
Desire is very prevalent in both Augustine’s Confessions and Virgil’s Aeneid. It often has dangerous consequences--whether it be falling away from God and spirituality, like Augustine, or shirking away from pietas like Aeneas. The Confessions illustrates how desires and choices can morph into habits which tear a person away from God whereas the Aeneid demonstrates that desire and furor are nearly interchangeable, and when gone wrong, can have deadly outcomes. The gravest consequence of desire for Augustine as seen in Confessions is him drawing himself away from God.…
Virgil, whose full name was Publius Vergilius Maro, was a Roman poet that lived between October 15, 70 BCE and Semptember 21, 19 BCE. He is known for his three major works; the Eclogues, the Georgics, and most importantly, the Aeneid. The Aeneid tells the legendary story of the Trojan warrior, Aeneas, and his travel to Italy, where he becomes the ancestor of the Romans. Generations of Romans regarded Virgil as the greatest poet of their lifetime. Virgil’s poems show his great skill in the music and diction of his verses.…
Titus Livius and The Early History of Rome Roman history is subjective to those who study it and write about the rise and the fall of the Roman Empire. One ancient historian named Titus Livius, who was born in either 59 B.C. or 64 B.C. , had written a series of books titled History of Rome. Not much is known about Titus Livius in his younger years except that he had lived in the city of Padua, which had suffered greatly in Rome’s Civil War. His books are split into several different decades of Rome’s rich history. The first series he wrote in History of Rome are broken down in five separate book(s) titled: “Rome under the Kings”, “The Beginning of the Republic”, “The Patricians at Bay”, “War and Politics”, and lastly “The Capture of Rome”.…
Through out the course of time woman have been said to be weak minded when is comes to ruling, because they are ruled by their emotions and most of all passion and love. Woman have been said to be the source to many of our problems During the reading of The lliad, The Odyssey, and The Aeneid the woman that have "caused the problems" were being told to do so by gods and goddesses. For Example in the lliad Helen was the "problem woman" in this story, however she never left Troy because Aphrodite/ Venus told her not to leave. This created more problems in the story because as we see in the Aeneid, Aeneas sees Helen and want to kill her because she caused the ten year war and then let the Greeks into Troy, who then slaughtered all the men…
Greek and Roman authors describe female foreigners in almost diametric terms within the same works, creating a contradictory narrative. Due to Greek and Roman gender roles, women were meant to be subservient. To uphold cultural expectations for female characters, authors had to characterize them as weak. However, for the story to uphold cultural expectations regarding foreigners, the very same characters had to be described as violent and unstable. These opposing ideas lead to a dual view of the same characters.…
One of the ways this is achieved is by the way that in the epic poem has gods addressing the country and what they have to say about the future leadership of it. During the Aeneid, Venus is worried that her son, Aeneas, will not once again retrieve his lost throne and Zeus responds reassuring her that her son will still achieve the fame that had been promised. He mentions the bloodline of Aeneas and states that, “From that noble blood will arise a Trojan Caesar, his empire bound by the Ocean, his glory by the stars: Julius, a name passed down from Iulus, his great forebear,” (Vergil, Book 1 Lines 342-4). From this quote it is told that Julius Caesar is a direct descendent of the man Aeneas, the founder of Rome according to the Aeneid. This then also makes Augustus a descendent and in turn evokes the idea of Rome coming full circle back to what it was prophesized to become from the Roman gods.…
In the second book of the Aeneid, Virgil portrays his main character Aeneas as a saddened man as he begins to tell the story of how his beloved city Troy fell to the Greek army. Starting with how the Greek he explains how the Trojans were tricked by Sinon, the Greek captive and spy, and the goddess Minerva, into taking the Greek horse, full of Greek soldiers, behind Trojan lines. In this book, he also explains in detial how he fullfiled his pietas toward his father, his wife Creusa, and to the gods during his flee from the city of Troy. While everyone in Troy is asleep, including Aeneas and his family members, Sinon, the Greek captive who ends up deceiving and betraying the Trojans to the Greeks, opens up the belly of the Trojan horse, and releases all of the Greek fighters inside. The Greeks then cause chaos around the city, starting by killing the Trojan guards, and setting things on fire.…
Paper Assignment #1 In my opinion, I think that anything that belongs to someone’s close friend could be considered to be of sentimental value. I also find it highly possible that if the object contains a symbolic background of some kind, it may carry an even deeper meaning. Considering how close Aeneas and Pallas became as friends, I’m sure that somewhere behind the scenes, it’s possible that Pallas may have told Aeneas a story or two about why he chose to wear that belt and what it means to him. I also think that the images on the belt were highly capable of influencing violent feelings and actions.…
Aeneas even declares, “It is not my own will-this quest for Italy” (4.395-415). Proving his piety by abandoning the woman he loves, Aeneas demonstrates the religious fervor that holds high esteem in Roman culture. Aeneas possesses these qualities in order to represent his nation, and these qualities all are positive in nature. Therefore, one concludes that the Roman Empire must demonstrate excellent leadership, strong family bonds, and great reverence for the gods. Virgil continues his argument when he includes the god’s response to Aeneas’s behavior.…

Aeneas' Leadership in the Aeneid. In the Aeneid by Virgil the main character Aeneas tries to be a good leader to his people, but fails; showing the lack of good leadership qualities in the majority of the book. A good leader is a person who supports people he/she is in charge of, sets a good example following rules of pietas, and helps in accomplishing a common goal.…
