It is now one week till Tahz’s final exam paper is due, and he is currently looking at the rubric for the first time. “Hmmmmmm timeless theme you say” Tahz thought to himself. For Tahz had recently read excerpts from both the Iliad and Odyssey, and his prompt told him to discuss a timeless theme within the two stories that portray its greatness today. Having no idea what to write about, Tahz thought about the key points that he pulled from the stories. The Greek classics had a few key themes that he thought of: wrath, honor, family, and the glory of war. Tahz decided that he would stick with the idea of the glorification of war. He thought to himself, “War is clearly an ever prevalent theme in our society, and it is glorified in our media through movies and commercials. For days he had been stuck, stuck in what people commonly call writer’s block. He had no clue how to start his paper of how to format it, because their was a strict 2 paragraph and less than one page rule on this paper. He was expected to write concise and effectively, while defending his stance. Before this paper Tahz had not written under a length restriction, and he was slightly nervous. Bemused he wondered to himself, “how will I write a paper about nothing I know.” Little did poor Tahz know, he was bound to write the best paper of his life soon enough. Tahz started thinking of ways to brainstorm ideas for his paper. He started by creating a list of ways that our society looks at war and violence, but couldn’t get past negative ideas. He then looked at society as a whole and tried to compare pre-determined destiny to the idea of free will that we live with, yet again deciding that it was not a strong topic to base his paper on. Finally giving up on brainstorming, Tahz sighed and went to the living room to watch the news. When he saw news about an update on the war against ISIL in Iraq. Suddenly spring from the lurking shadows of his mental constraints, Tahz realized he could relate the glory of war and thirst of mankind to the United State’s current war(s) in the Middle East. He was able to relate the ordeals of Odysseus's journey home and Achilles pursuit of vengeance to the ordeals of troops to this day,
