Bonaparte is visiting the victims of the Plague among other officers. The painter Antoine-Jean Gros depicts the heroism of Bonaparte as he reaches to touch a plague victim with his bare hand while other officers watch from a distance in fear of contagious contact. The painting is conveyed through heroic nudes and Bonaparte is subject as heroic being placed kind of in the center of the painting like being in the center of attention. The painter is implying that Bonaparte is exemplifying virtue and courage during the terror of warfare. The painting also emphasizes the suffering of the plague victims, instilling a feeling of dread to the audience.…
Napoleon pushed his men; he pushed them beyond their logistical means and diminishing physical capabilities which were exacerbated due to lack of rations and supplies. This mistake in judgement for Napoleon as articulated by Gompert et al, “Napoleon did not dwell on how vastly different war in Russia would be compared with the wars that formed his experience and conditioned his thinking. Intuition is no match for unfamiliar situations. Evidently, self-doubt and reflection were as difficult for Napoleon as humility was” (46).…
I would like to introduce two paintings from both Neoclassical periods as well as the Romantic to explain how the French Revolution affected. Jacques-Louis David was a leader of Neoclassical artists. Before the French Revolution, he commissioned from the King of France who made him on the work on Oath of the Horatii to express loyalty to the King and state. However, when the start of the French Revolution, David painted The Lictors Bring to Brutus, the Bodies of His Sons. It had been banned displaying on Paris Salon by the royal court because of its revolution-supporting theme.…
The Apulo- Corinthian Helmet was created in ancient Greece. The helmet dates around 520 BC to 480 BC. The helmet is a southeast Italian helmet and the name came from the city of Corinth. The Greek Corinthian models wore the helmets on their heads that covered their face. The helmets were bronze and covered the entire head with little splits in the helmets.…
Each component of the painting is essential in completing the visual narrative. Dominance is exhibited in the main figure of St. Clare. The full frontal stance is typical of Byzantine style art; however, what makes it dominant is the life like size of the portrait, Even though there is a lot going on in this picture, the central portrait seems to draw the attention of the viewer. Appropriate symmetry cannot be overlooked in this pictorial.…
Napoleon: A Political Life by Steven Englund crafts for the reader a detailed and comprehensive timeline of Napoleon Bonaparte’s origins and the events that led to rise to power through military success, political knowledge, and personal ambition. In order to accurately present this subject, Englund utilized a large amount of primary sources ranging from letters from Napoleon and others that are mentioned throughout the reading, publications from newspapers during the time, as well as many other reliable sources. Englund himself is an American Historian from California who currently lives in Paris and teaches History at the American University in Paris. It is fairly possible that this move to Paris and his occupation there served as inspiration for Napoleon: A Political Life.…
Francesco Petrarch Living a fulfilling life is what every man wants. At times there are things that will get in the way of that. Laziness and finding the easy way out, weakness to earthly impulses, and losing sight of the soul all prevent man from living the desired life. However, it can be controlled as long as a man is willing to work hard enough. Then one can live life to their fullest expectation.…
“The Death of Sardanapalus” painting is in the moment, anticlassical style, unlike “The Death of Socrates” which seems to be as if everyone what posed for a photo that was about to be taken, classical style. “The Death of Sardanapalus by Eugene Delacroix was inspired by the dramatic poem by Lord Byron in 1821” (“Death of Sardanapalus Art Work Analysis”). Sardanapalus is “the last king of the second Assyrian dynasty at the end of the ninth century” (pg. 63). The soldiers in the painting are enemies of the king that have come to kill him. He is laying in his elephant post bed as the soldiers breach the room and storm in on their horses.…
The purpose of this discussion is to compare two dying warrior sculptures in a pediment design. First, in order to fit the figures into the design, the artists had to angle the figures. The images were taller at the top and the bodies elongated to fit in the triangular shape. Dying warrior (5.24) holds a shield which is important in forming the tallest part of the triangle in the pediment design. The other sculpture (5.23) uses the head as the highest point of the triangle shape.…

Paintings have been used as a representation of people since human race originated. Through time it has become very lifelike and realistic due to the advancement in materials and techniques used by some talented artists. This paper discusses two types of paintings through their similarities and differences, as the first one being David’s Oath of the Horatii, 1784. Oil on canvas, 10’ 10” * 13’ 11”. And, Goya’s The Third of May 1808, 1814.…
Similar to Phillip Dwyer’s idea, Paul Stock presents the possibility that Napoleon interpreted himself in such a way that the world would have to see him as a “savior” like individual. However, unlike Dwyer, Stock addresses that what allowed “Romantics to appropriate Napoleon for themselves is the inconsistency of his image creation” (Stock 20). The Romantics had an idea of Napoleon, but used their own interpretations to mold how they viewed him. Unlike Dwyer, who portrayed that Napoleon used propaganda to have individuals blindly respect him, Stock has brought about the idea that Napoleon was viewed as a hero due to viewing different interpretations due to the inconsistency of how they have seen him. Napoleon himself “was so preoccupied with using circumstances to fashion his self-presentation, that he could not achieve any stability of image” (Stock 20).…
Pale sea foam softly laps the waterlogged body of three-year-old Aylan Kurdi in an image that crystallized the senseless suffering of thousands of Syrian refugees. Though the photo undoubtedly confronts its global audience with a reality that, oceans away, is easy to passively accept, could a single image really inspire viewers to take progressive action? As ocean levels rise, poverty ravages the third world, and both sexual and racial discrimination run rampant, it seems clear that something needs to be done; however, society seems content to or possibly clueless as to what to do to improve the dire situation. Maybe the answer lies in something that society tends to overlook in an era of technology: the arts. What if we could begin to shape…

One painting that really caught my eye is the painting Jupiter and Thetis by Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres (Getlein, 2016). This painting was inspired from Homer’s Iliad, “The Greek epic of the Trojan War (Getlein, 2016).” Without knowing what it really means you can tell more or less what is happening based off of the artists creativity. From first sight, you can see A man sitting in a throne which depicts royalty.…
