She begins to wear scarves and the government separates the boys from the girls in the school setting. Next, the scarves are worn for survival. “They insulted me. If she had been wearing the veil nothing would have been said to her. Also, the way one dresses will go along with identity. “In no time, the way people dressed became an ideological sign” (Satrapi,75). Marjane provides images of the fundamentalist women and the modern women she also does the same for men. If women denounced western influences they were fully covered except for their face. Next, men would not wear western made clothing and they would stop shaving. “Islam is more or less against shaving” (Satrapi,75). In addition to that, changes in identity come from other people’s view of the person or what they think it takes to enter adulthood. An exception to this is, changing when one’s life depends on it. With identity and change intertwined everyone is constantly changing; hopefully they improve. Next, Marjane is an excellent example of someone who learned how to change and what it took to change. Marjane’s grandmother helped her learn what kinds of changes were helpful, such as her getting a divorce, and guided her through the process. Second, her father was a key helper as well, but he was helping Marjane discover who she wanted to be and what she wanted to get out of life. Thirdly, her mother was key as well but unlike her grandmother and father, she did not impact her daughter’s life in that way, but when Marjane needed any kind of comfort she was there to calm and soothe her. All of them together raised a beautiful, intelligent woman.
