4. From the ten suggestion Reid gives, I find section 7 “Wash-and-Wear Paragraphs’ the most confusing and yet reasonable, to get a grasp on. Working behind a set rules when writing an essay can feel restricted causing me to blankly stare at an empty piece paper until the epiphany of the writings gods finally strike me. Reid stated that the paragraphs length is based upon a rhetorical negotiation between the writer’s needs and the reader’s needs; I’ve yet grasped the concept of rhetorical writing so her implications are still confusing. Another writing style that Reid also mentioned is splitting paragraphs of the same key idea into subsections for a more clear and concise understanding, each starting with a clear beginning and ending.…
Another staple in mainstream education, Fishman dislikes the third-person formal essay describing it as “the ominous five-paragraph theme” (Fishman 246). One of Fishman's main concern is the situation that could potentially arise when the home view of literacy does not match the view in the school setting. She writes about the issues of a child conforming to the schools view of literacy. She describes conforming to the schools view as “a demand that seems unfair, uncalled for, and unnecessary, not to mention counterproductive and destructive” (Fishman 247). The passionate and harsh tone itself is potentially distracting; however, it is not nearly as distracting as when she contradicts the statement four paragraphs…
This should not always be used as you improve as a writer, you should also redevelop your procedure for writing. “What critics of the five-paragraph model should be objecting to is not that it is a formula, but that it is a weak formula” (Birkenstein & Graft 1). This quote separates different types of methodologies and demonstrates not all formulas are impractical but, there are more advantageous methods for different situations. As a high school student, I was never a particularly strong writer, I often lacked direction and the poetic language in my works. However, what the five paragraph essay did for me what guide me as a beginner to able to write my idea in an organized manner.…
He showed me that with every argument comes a counter argument; adding a counter argument reinforced my argument greatly. Another technique I applied to my essays with Professor Castro’s instruction was planning. In high school, planning an essay seemed like a waste of time because the assignments were always just five paragraph, five sentence essays. Since we had to write these essays in such a short amount of time for tests, I was able to produce the work the night before. On the other hand, Professor Castro has shown the divergence between high school and college; planning and editing are two essential steps in writing.…
Five-Paragraph Construct To strengthen my misconception of the five paragraph format, I have researched information from articles and books. These sites have been an incredible way of seeing my construct in different points of views. Although I will be including an article that expresses a good feedback of this construct, I have found various facts and opinions that strongly support my misconception. Nonetheless, just because you were taught this inferior format does not mean you will show up to college and be doomed for your English class. The five paragraph construct can help you to be aware of keeping your essay well organized.…
It’s only typical for a student to abhor essays. They’re long, boring, and require hours of thinking and comprehending. Robert Atwan provides a different view of essays in “Forward: Of Topics.” Atwan discusses the evolution of essays; how we have transitioned from a speculative writing to a more definitive style. It’s clear that Atwan prefers the traditional essay.…
Throughout the first semester of College Composition, I wrestled with three essays, all differing in format and content. The first was a narrative that reflected our educational experience. After this came an analysis of a visual text, followed by a research paper. The narrative was the easiest to write; however, I acquired important skills for writing the other two, which were in a less familiar format. With the three essays, I learned about my own writing skills and habits concerning development and critical thinking, time management, and organization.…
Does the five-paragraph essay constrict students within the parameters of only five paragraphs, or does the five-paragraph essay provide an organized format for writers to use regularly? The five-paragraph essay is taught to give students the ability to have a structured format at hand when they need it, but the format doesn’t prove to be useful. While many believe that the five-paragraph essay should continue to be taught in secondary education, this format restricts the writer from writing more than the allotted five paragraphs, distracts from more significant topics, and inhibits the natural flow of the work. Firstly, the five-paragraph essay causes the writer to feel as if they must stay within the five paragraph limit, simply because that is the structure of this form.…
But a rich history isn’t all the five paragraph essay format still has to offer. Today, it is easier for teachers to use a universal method when confronted with over-crowded public school classrooms. With essay writing a priority for most schools, the five-paragraph essay format has emerged as the simplest and most effective way to teach essay writing. Marie Foley, the acting Dean of the College of Nursing at Seton Hall University said, “High school instructors are expected to teach 150-plus students how to write an essay when the essay by its very nature requires personalized instructions. Though I begrudge the time spent on unteaching the five-paragraph essay, I often wonder whether I too might be tempted to teach with a formula if faced with that many students” (Foley 231).…
Writing five-paragraph essays has become a popular cultural trend. By comprehensive look at the five-paragraph essay and picking apart its different aspects, it explains the cultural significance the five-paragraph essay holds. When viewing the five-paragraph essay’s significance, it shows that conformity of the five-paragraph essay plays an important role in the authors writing. By breaking down a five-paragraph essay into its different elements, it is easier to understand what the five-paragraph essay consists of.…
In the class of Comm Arts, one thing that many people dislike is the writing of teaching points in paragraph form. Writing teaching points in paragraph form is a waste of time, an unhelpful action for students, as well as an action that lowers motivation in students. There is an obvious alternate suggestion to writing teaching points in paragraph form, too. Writing teaching points in paragraph form is a definite waste of time. Four students were interviewed, and all of them said that writing and discussing teaching points takes from two to six minutes.…
Growing up with catholic education, I was primarily taught the importance of reading and writing. The generic hamburger 5-paragraph essay format was on our 10 commandments of writing and so was the idea of a minimum 6-8 sentences per paragraph. Entering high school English class, I found myself in a different situation than most typical high school students. My school offered International Baccalaureate English classes; these classes were structured differently than that of AP or Standard English. In this class, we were left to fend on our own.…
When thinking about an essay, it seems like it is involved with every relevant topic in the world today. There are so many different types of essays that the real description of an essay has been lost. One of our greatest desires is to find out why essays matter as much as they do. It seems as if our careers are based on a five-paragraph paper that if we do not achieve it to perfection then we will succumb to the bottom of society.…
I was wrong. Even on such a simple prompt as “why am I taking college classes” I was struggling to organize my thought in my head. In high school upon reading a prompt an outline would form in my head almost instantly. I began to write and found myself staring at the computer screen without any clue what to write next. In our second assigned essay I once again struggled deeply.…
Writing an essay can be troublesome at times, along with other schoolwork assignments to be turned in, there 's a life outside of school as well to be had. This being my official first semester of college I knew a majority of the assignments would be writing essays’. Trust me I know, for some it comes easy; some students can receive the writing assignment and have a paper done the same day. Some of us are not as fortunate, others struggle to compose a sentence, a paragraph, much less a two or three page essay. Everyone has their own writing process, pet peeves, rituals, pre-rituals.…
