In ‘Death Alone’, the title conveys the state of depression that Neruda had suffered from. The title itself suggests how everyone will die alone, and how he can only think of death. “I see, when alone at times” supports the title because when he is alone he only thinks of death. This shows how he is searching for the overall meaning of death and tries to understand this question of mankind. ‘Alone’ in the title shows how death is imminent and we continue to think of it when we are by ourselves. Neruda wrote this title because he wants us to understand how he can only think of this one thing – death, and the overall idea of how we should understand our own demise. This suggests that they may have esoteric knowledge which emphasizes the point that they should know the answer as they have constant contact with dead bodies. However, these “ashy specialist” only knew how “to burn me”. This shows how those who spend so much time with the dead do not learn anything and does not understand or know the meaning of life and only know how to “burn”. This emphasizes on Neruda’s intention of how those who even work with the dead will never be able to accept the fact that dying is our destiny.
