Matthew Richard Schlimm, who wrote “This Strange and Sacred Scripture” raises a plethora of questions to sections of the Bible people have always thought to have had answers too. As someone who has always taken the Bible at face value and believed everything to be true; both the Old Testament class and Schlimm’s book make me question what I truly know as a fact from the Bible. Both the class and the book make me wonder why God did certain things in a particular way too. One of the first topics of Schlimm’s book that we discussed in class was, is it okay to have doubts and ask questions about the Bible? Which was a really hard topic for me to comprehended at the beginning of the class, but know my perspective on the question has completely changed.…

Christianity. It is a single word with great and powerful meaning, but one that is defined differently by people of many different denominational backgrounds. According to Dictionary.com, christianity is “The religion based on the life and teachings of Jesus Christ. Christians believe that Jesus Christ is the Messiah, sent by God. They believe that Jesus, by dying and rising from the dead, made up for the sin of Adam and thus redeemed the world, allowing all who believe in him to enter heaven.…
But the most important of the trade and the placement of Mecca had been that Mecca was in the middle of Northern africa and Asia. The placement of mecca allowed fairly easy trade from surrounding countries from near and far, One of the trading routes had stretched all the way out to “Bukhara,Uzbekistan” (Document A). People had come all the way out from there just so that they could trade at Mecca, because at the time it was a very Important trading city. There had also been Trading routes “from the red sea across the desert to Iraq”(Document A) And this allowed traders to load up ships with cargo and easily get to Mecca with their cargo.…
Chapter six of Practicing Christian Doctrine, by Beth Felker Jones, chiefly discusses Christology and the various heresies that have surrounded it over the years. Christology, which is the study of Christ, helps one to learn more about Jesus and his identity and how to live a good Christian life by forming a relationship with the Lord. In order for Christology to work, the person of Jesus must be known and a major idea discussed in this novel is homoousios, Jesus is full and truly God. Two other important characteristics of God found in this chapter are immutability¬¬ and impassibility. Immutability means that God is unchanging and impassibility states that He is never overwhelmed by emotion.…

The Preface of N.T. Wright's book, The Challenge of Jesus: Rediscovering Who Jesus Was and Is, explains what Wright's intent and purposes were for writing this book. Wright's purposes for writing this book was to show who the real Jesus was, what his teachings meant and how they can be applied to the modern society. Wright presumes that Christians go Sunday to Sunday repeating scripture and repeating the same things over and over, not fully analyzing what the text is saying. He claims that people need to analyze who Jesus really was and what his teachings really meant to fully grasp his purpose on Earth and how it affects humans in today's modern society.…
Chapter one of Practicing Christian Doctrine conveys the aspects and principles of theology and the Christian life. Theology is the study of the things of God. Scripture helps us understand the ideals of the Christian life, such as discipleship, faith, and love. Scripture equips us for faithful living and teaches us wisdom and understanding.…
And while trust in human reason and hope for happiness in this world faded during the last centuries of the Roman Empire, a new view of the world began to establish its roots - Christianity. This view had emphasized escape from the world of coercion and a growing connection with higher existence. In response to the decline of Hellenism, Christianity offered a reason worth living to the spiritually disappointed polytheistic followers and the Greco-Roman world: hope in personal immortality. Triumph of Christianity marked a break with classical antiquity and a new stage in the evolution of the West because there was a fundamental difference between the classical and the Christian understanding of God, the individual and the purpose of life.…
I thoroughly enjoyed reading through all seven chapters of Philip Yancey’s book “The Bible Jesus Read.” It felt as though I was sitting across form the writer just soaking in all he had to say. After reading commentaries and Bible dictionaries, this book gave a fresh perspective on the Old Testament. Yancey was not interested in the nitty gritty details of the Old Testament like date and author of books, but rather focusing on the point and the big picture.…

Historical Context The book of James was written by James, who was the half-brother of Jesus. It was written in Jerusalem, where James lived at the time, and was written around 40 to 50 AD. It is assumed that the book was written before 50 AD, because James did not talk about the Jerusalem conference in the book, which took place in 50 AD. The book was not written for a specific group of people, as stated in James 1:1 –“James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, to the twelve tribes scattered among the nations: Greetings.”…
The word gospel means the absolute truth. In This is Gospel, by rock band Panic! at the Disco, the truths about addiction and our society come to light. The search for historical Jesus is a difficult one. As mentioned in the video "From Jesus to Christ: The First Christians," there is no written information about Jesus at the time that he lived, the written information we have is after the time of Jesus’ life and we do not know who the author(s) are. I believe that you have to integrate the historical, and archeology, findings with the messages in the Bible; you cannot ignore solid evidence. As we have learned in this class you must take into account the social norms of the time period of Jesus. You must also take into consideration the various meanings/translations of words from Arabic to Greek to English (Jews does not mean Jews as we know it today).…
