1.“She served the people all her life, and now the people are scattered, driven like tumbleweeds by the winds of war. The war sucks everything dry…” (Anaya 13)
Anaya uses a simile to compare the people of Santa Rosa, New Mexico to tumbleweeds. This is comparing them with the environment of the town and connecting them with the environment that they live in. Anaya is saying that the people of the town are in a state to where they have stopped caring and are easily swayed like a tumbleweed.

7.”It will only end when blood is spilled” (Anaya 217)

This ties to the theme that revenge does not settle anything. Anaya also uses allusion with this to emphasize the theme of revenge and how it doesn’t lead to any peaceful or logical solution. An example of this allusion would be Shakespeare’s literary work Hamlet.
8.”I was so startled and frightened that I jumped like a wounded rabbit, but he made no move to catch me.” (Anaya 271)
A simile is used to show vulnerability. Even though pretty much the entire dynamic and plot of the story relies on Antonio he is still an innocent child.
9.”In my dreams last night I saw three figures.” (Anaya 350)
Anaya is using Antonio’s dream to effect the plot. This ties into how heavy Antonio is to the plot because his dreams are usually hidden signals or symbols for something to

This was the first time in the novel that Antonio and his father had an in depth conversation about anything pertaining to Antonio’s future, so Antonio enjoyed the experience and learned that no matter what anyone else wants told him to be that the decision is ultimately for Antonio to make for himself. “Ay, every generation, every man is a part of his past. This reveals the value that Antonio had for his innocence. The agony being brought through this demise is from the way that he is having his innocence torn from him at such a youthful age, and the way that he has neither the control nor the ability to stop it. It does literally hurt him, however it harms him in a considerably more metaphorical sense too. In this, he is losing all he ever knew or thought he knew about his life and the world. This initially struggle puts his own particular religion into question too, a key component to his identity.…
