In the essay, “A peaceful Woman Explains Why She Carries a Gun” by Linda M. Hasselstrom in the anthology, ‘Pattern for College Writing: A Rhetorical Reader and Guide, the author support the idea of carrying a gun as a safety measure. Hasselstrom shows how it is unsafe being a lady and roaming around thousands of miles on deserted roads, and abused by men while camping with a friend. Hasselstrom felt insecure whenever she was faced by a misbehaving adult or when she found out signs of trespassers in her house and could not do anything about it. Although she knew she cannot face those men if ever she would be attacked, she encouraged her-self to take safety measures for self-protection. She started by taking kung Fu classes to martial arts, until she read an article about how even expert women in martial arts were raped and beaten. She finally ended up taking pistol classes, after so much practice with her husband George, she got a license to carry a handgun.

In case of emergency specially during long drives where you might decide to stop at a gas station or any lodges or hotel, handgun gives that sense of security that if you get caught by any stranger you can handle the situation. Controversially, people this can also take as what if a person is on a long drive and passing a certain state which does not allow hand gun, for instance New Jersey, and was pulled over by a policeman, finding a concealed carry cause trouble to that person. So, once you decide to carry a gun you are making a long term decision, not only you need to have training, but also knowledge and the laws of every state where you are
