Carrie Snow, a comedian, once said, “Technology… is a queer thing. It brings you great gifts with one hand, and it stabs you in the back with the other.” In the 1950s, the most recent and powerful piece of technology invented was the atomic bomb. The United States dropped the bomb on Japan, in an effort to end WWII. The United States was also not in good terms with the Soviet Union. Japan surrendered and the much feared nuclear war never happened. The author, Ray Bradbury, wrote the story, “There Will Come Soft Rains” during the time of the atomic bombings. Williams states, “Monitor a child’s Internet activity with an app. Keep worries at bay and be involved in what your child is viewing, texting, or messaging online.” This means that parents can easily check on what their child is doing at all times with just a simple app. Sadly, this type of tech is still harmful since it encourages a behavior called “Helicopter Parenting” onto this generation’s parents which weakens the trust between them and their children. Adding on, Williams says, “Cell phones allow families to text updates on activities, practices, and even grocery lists. Do you remember how hard it was to organize schedules without cell phones?” In other words, thanks to cell phones, it is now easier to connect with family and organize your schedule. This new advancement in electronics is still noxious to humanity since they are letting their phones become their brains and let a small piece of metal remember everything for them to make their lives easier than it already was. Although Amy Williams makes some good points in her blog post, “How Technology Helps Us In Our Daily Lives,” it is still obvious that our new advancements in tech is still very destructive to this generation.
Technology is harmful to society because it can harm our environment at any moment. All these advancements in computers are really damaging to both our generation’s brains and environment. Since electronics glitch really easily, it is not wise to put all your trust into a small device. Like Carrie Snow said, technology can be both helpful and harmful.
