H. English Not only was Paul Rusesabagina brilliant in a number of ways, he used his creative mind to manipulate the circumstances he was dealing with in Rwanda to save his fellow citizens. An Ordinary Man is about one courageous man named Paul and how he fought through evil just to save others lives. In 1994, over 800,000 people were murdered in Rwanda and this is the story of how Paul saved thousands of people from being slaughtered and how he used verbal power to fight back instead of physical. While the causes of the Rwandan genocide had many different and specific reasons on why it happened, it’s even better to discuss how we can prevent another genocide from happening again. Most of the family thought nothing of it but Paul and his brother-in-law knew something was wrong. “My brother-in-law shook hands in the parking lot and we urged each other to be careful. I could not have known it then, but I was shaking his hand for the last time.” (73 Rusesabagina) When Paul shook his brother-in-laws hand and said be careful, he never would have known that it would be the last time he would ever have contact with his brother-in-law again. To insure genocide won’t happen again, a government needs to have checks and balances. Unlike Rwanda, there were more Hutus in the government which helped get propaganda out to all of the Hutus, which triggered hatred and violence. “All Tutsis will parish, all Tutsis will disappear from Earth, they will die like rats.”(Hope in Hell) If there weren't so many Hutus inside of the government, getting this propaganda out would have been much harder and might have changed what happened between the Hutus and Tutsis. After showing all of the different factors on why the genocide started and how it can be prevented for the future, I believe everything happened for a reason. After the President’s plane got shot down and negative propaganda started to occur on the radio station, everything turned south. All of the factors contributed to the genocide equally. It teaches us all a lesson so we can do as much as we can so a genocide won’t happening
