The world has a very distant perception of what reality can be in our society. Both stories explain what the real world is, how poorly informed society can be, and what can lead to taking different actions. However, despite the racial inequality, both turned their experiences into something informative towards society. In many circumstances the main characters in the stories were in an overwhelming situation which caused many doubts that became stressful towards them. However, despite some obstacles such as nationality and inequality, today Amy Tan and Brent Staples are professional and successful writer.

On one hand we can observe Amy Tan who tells us about the cultural and social differences that maybe many people are going through. Also, through her reading she shows everyone the love that she has for her language and the importance of understanding that even if a person has "broken English" this does not make them less intelligent, it also shows us that with her determination today she has become successful and an admirable writer. She also demonstrates that she became a professional writer in a world that wanted and pushed her into being on a different field such as a scientist or a mathematician. The same way Brent Staples takes us through the reading explaining that not all black men are harmful. It shows his readers to be more sympathetic towards everyone and the importance of treating everyone with the dignity they deserve. He also lets everyone know how difficult it was for people to treat him differently because of his skin color and everything that had to happen in order for the discrimination to lessen around him. Discrimination and prejudice towards black men are completely mistaken by society. Staples's essay successfully reveals the emotions felt by black men when they are prejudiced against and the injustice that black people have to deal with every day. “I chose, perhaps unconsciously, to remain a shadow--timid, but a survivor" and, "I whistle melodies from Beethoven and Vivaldi...It is my equivalent of the cowbell that hikers wear when they know they are in bear country” (Staples, 2018, p.236).
