This story revolves around a couple , Nick Dunne and Amy Elliot Dunne who are struggling from their difficult marriage because of several reasons. Amy perfect from everyway being the coolest girl around funny and fabulous and Nick with a winning smile and clefty chin as charming as amy is. Nick used to be a New York magazine writer but he lost his job because of downsize and at the same time amy lost her job as a magazine quiz writer. They both relocate from New York City to Missouri and also when nick’s twin sister margo calls to inform about his dying parents. After some time nick opens up a bar by using his wife’s last trust fund and runs it with his sister.
On their fifth anniversary amy goes missing and everyone suspects nick for her missing. As he started the business using amy’s money,increased her life insurance and seems quite unemotional since her missing which is an unexpected expression from a husband. It becomes more and more interesting to figure out the missing of amy. Later on after the involvement of police and increasing media attention on the case, some new facts were discovered. Nick has been having a affair with one of his college students named Andie. The police finds boxes of violent pornography and many other items he had denied purchasing which were hidden in his sister’s woodshed. Moreover, further it is revealed that amy was pregnant. So finally nick hires Tanner Bolt, a lawyer who specializes in defending men accused of killing their wives. But the twist comes when in the later half of the book it is discovered a lot of facts were hidden being the fact that amy and nick were the narrator of the story. Both were hiding things and explaining their sides of the story. One of the shocking things are that amy is alive and she’s trying to frame nick for her “death”. Her diary is fake so to misguide the police and media. But the fact that his wife is framing her is only discovered by nick but there is no way that nick can prove it. Then together nick , margo and tanner try to figure out ways on changing nick’s public perception . Nick discovers about two people who were in contact with her and have tried to cause harm to her in some or the other way…Tommy O’Hara and Hillary Handy who were class mates of Amy and Amy had set Tommy up for not being loyal to her and Hillary for not doing the things the way Amy wanted them. And here he gets to know this weird thing about Amy the way she has punished them both likewise she is framing Nick on charge of her murder. Further, Nick was interviewed by a amateur reported named Rebecca whom he met on the bar and allows her to interview him and because of the positive reception he was interviewed by Sharon Schieber , one of the popular and renowned reporters and he was apologetic for cheating on her with Andie and requests Amy to come back.
