The Effect of the Amount of Light on Sowbugs After Being Shone on Them for 30 Seconds
Another name for Sowbugs is Porcellio Laevis and these creatures are land living crustaceans, mostly aquatic invertebrates, such as the lobster, crab, and crayfish. They are found in most parts of the world, but are most common throughout North America. Since sowbugs are crustaceans, they breathe through gills. Gills are the primary breathing way for all crustaceans and they must be kept moist (4). In addition, these creatures are flat and oval (1). They have seven legs, jointed appendages, a hard exoskeleton, fused abdominal segments, and two pairs of antennas. Not to mention that sowbugs are approximately 0.50inch and they are brown to a gray color with

To gather accurate data place the 28cm x 14.75cm clear, plastic box horizontally on a flat surface and placed the turned off lamp with the 60 watt light bulb 10 cm from right side of the box. Plug in the lamp with the light bulb screwed in, then turn it on and off two times to make sure the lamp worked and to minimize chance of error during the experiment. Then place the graph paper with one centimeter blocks inside the plastic box to be able to see and know exactly how far away the bugs got from the light source. We did this to also minimize the chance of error in the calculation of the distance the sowbugs were from the light source. Make sure to tape the excess parts of the paper to the sides of the box to ensure that the bugs do not crawl under the paper. Next, place the four sowbugs on the right side of the clear, plastic box to get ready to begin the experiment and place the 14 cm cardboard inside the box and close to the vertical, right side of the box to hold back the sowbugs before starting the timer. One of you must turn on the lamp and started the timer, while the other person quickly pulls up the 14 cm cardboard out of the box at the same exact time as the other person starts the timer and turns on the lamp. This way the data collected would be more accurate and this minimized the chance of error. Once the timer stops, quickly …show more content…
We put the sowbugs in a clear, plastic box and then we set our light source, which was a lamp, different distances away from the box. Then, we observed the sowbugs and collected data. We concluded that the sowbugs get farther away from the light as the lamp is closer to them since we can see in the graph from Presentation of Processed Data that when the lamp was 10 centimeters away from the box, the sowbugs got the farthest

The results of our light and dark choice chamber experiment are ambiguous. The pillbugs appeared to be indifferent towards either the light or dark chambers. The pillbugs did not stay in one environment for a long period of time because they were active and constantly switched between the two habitats. This shows a lack of preference as well. Our data was fairly erratic as shown in figure 5, which is reflective of the pillbugs activity.…

Environmental Effects on Pillbug Behavior Catherine Liapes October 14, 2015 AP Biology- Pd.9 Mr. Angus Introduction: Before conducting this lab, I researched information on pillbugs and learned that pill bugs are commonly found in damp environments such as piles of leaves, or under logs. Although they are crustaceous, they can still spend their entire lives on land. They are about ¾ inch in length with seven pairs of legs, and multiple antennae. Pillbugs are nocturnal and mainly consume rotting vegetation.…

Isopods are everywhere, from the sea, to fresh water to even land. “Isopods are a highly diverse group that inhabit a wide variety of habitats and lifestyles” (Júnior et al, 2015). Isopods that inhabit on land are what are known as terrestrial isopods. They share a close relationship to lobsters, fish, and shrimp due to their gills which mean they have more characteristics of a animal than an insect. Armadillidium Vulgare, which are commonly known as pill bugs, tend to live in moist places.…

Pill Bugs: An experiment Introduction Pill bugs are very small and can be found anywhere. Under rocks, in between cracks, in your science class; they are everywhere! However, it is common knowledge that pill bugs do not like to be in open spaces. There are just too many dangerous possibilities, and they don’t need to take the risks. In this experiment, we tested to see if light affected the decisions of where pill bugs like to stay.…

It was not exact to the results given, therefore I marked it incorrect. My hypothesis was that after a bigger amount of time under the light, the plant will give out more glucose and O2. This part was correct, but not because “if the light is closer, the process will be faster”. It was only due to time, not distance. It is true that if we left the lamp in a position of 5cm distance, same result could have been given faster.…

Although the intensity of the yellow light decreased, the distance squared sum conversely went up. The LUX reading at 10cm away from the light was 162.3 however at 100cm away, the LUX reading was 17.6. The above graph, formulated from the data obtained during the experiment, displays the relationship between the distance and the intensity of the light. It could be seen in the graph that, when the distance from the source is elevated, the amount of light is distributed a larger area.…

These beetles cause costly damage, both environmentally and ecologically. The Asian longhorn beetle (anoplophora glabripennis), the Two Spotted Oak Buprestid (Agrilus Biguttatus) and the large pine weevil (hylobius abietis) are three beetles that pose increasing threats to UK forestry. An outbreak of A. glabripennis in 2012 caused the felling of over 2,000 trees. The UK climate is not particularly favorable…
