Usually, when immigrants come to the United States, they start off with nothing but a luggage and a dream. Many A-list celebrities that are important to our society are immigrants. Some of those celebrities include Justin Bieber, who is from Canada, Rihanna, who is from Barbados, Mila Kunis, who is from Ukraine, and many others. The two celebrities I will be focusing on are Justin Bieber and Rihanna. Justin Drew Bieber was born on March 1, 1994, in London, Ontario, Canada to Pattie Mallette and Jeremy Bieber. “I come from a little town in Canada called Stratford, with a population of 30,000 people…” (Bieber 9). He never dreamed of ever becoming a big millionaire popstar. “I just wanted to be a regular kid who does all of the normal things other kids do… I never thought I’d get to do anything other than maybe become a carpenter and maybe turn that into a business. The mere thought of becoming a star didn’t even seem possible. It was like going to the moon or winning the lottery.” (Bieber 9). Around the age of 12, he started posting videos on YouTube of himself singing so that his family could hear him sing. It was all meant to be fun and games; he never thought he would go viral on YouTube, a large platform for posting videos. A …show more content…
“About 60.4% of people over the age of 16 in the U.S. are employed.” (Labor Force Statistics from the Current Population Survey). Many adults work to provide for their families or themselves. One book that captures this aspect of the American Dream is Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. The story follows two migrant workers named George and Lennie that go from ranch to ranch looking for work. Of Mice and Men shows the struggles that these two men go through in order to have an income. One of the main characters, George, says this about how they live and work: “"Guys like us, that work on ranches, are the loneliest guys in the world. They got no family. They don't belong no place. They come to a ranch an' work up a stake and then they go inta town and blow their stake, and the first thing you know they're poundin' their tail on some other ranch. They ain't got nothing to look ahead to."” (Steinbeck 13-14). This shows that this isn’t the American Dream they had envisioned, but they are one step closer the achieving the dream that they do have in mind. George also says this about all the work they have to do: “…If I was bright, if I was even a little bit smart, I'd have my own little place, an' I'd be bringin' in my own crops, 'stead of doin' all the work and not getting what comes up outa the ground.” (Steinbeck 39). By saying this, George means that working is hard and sometimes you want to just give up.
