Amanda Todd Case

The story of Amanda Todd’s case received national headlines and brought the tension of bullying and harassment to the public. Since Amanda's death many schools nationwide have established rules to prevent disasters like Amanda’s case from occurring and overall for preventing students committing suicide due to cyberbullying and harassment. Amanda had to change multiple schools and struggled to make friends that did not judge her for a picture. When high school students are exposed to the internet situations such as Amanda’s can occur. The students need to be aware of how dangerous social media can be and learn from prior cases like Amanda's and not make the same mistake. An article on stopbullying.gov states, “[c]yberbullying messages and images can be posted anonymously and distributed quickly to a very wide audience. Cyberbullying impacts the victim because the behavior of the adolescent begins to change into a low self esteem individual. Students attending high school are more vulnerable to harassment and cyberbullying because these individuals use technology more than any other age group. Furthermore, adolescents are more prone to be bullies due to peer pressure and popularity contests to fit in. Even though he or she may not support the idea of the bully hurting other peers the adolescents do not intervene and instead watch what occurs. Oftentimes during bullying and harassment situations peers become bystanders and do not attempt to help due to fear. When bullying occurs online students tend to support the bullying by adding comments that hurt victims and others just ignore the problem altogether.
