Alvarez Changed My Life

When I was the age of three my parents made a decision that would forever change my life. May 2003 is the date my parents decided our lives would be better if we immigrated to the United States. At the time we were living in Juarez, Mexico, as it is widely known Juarez doesn’t have the best track record for being a family friendly place. There was always crime on the streets and my parents didn’t feel safe raising their first daughter. Both my parents worked and would take turns taking care of me. While my mother worked during the day at a factory my dad would do the best to take care of me. After five in the afternoon my mom would finish work and my dad would walk with me to these train tracks and wait for my mom to show up. After she showed up my dad would hand me to her and he would walk to work while me …show more content…
They were shorty presented with the opportunity of a lifetime. My mom’s aunt had recently gotten her residency and urged my parent into getting travelers visas for us. My parents listened to stories about life in the United States being better and there being more opportunities for them. They realized that the best choice for my future would be to leave Mexico. My parents used all their money and were thankfully approved to get visas for me and themselves.
Just like that my life was flipped for the better. We arrived in Twin Falls, Idaho in August and ever since then we have lived in Idaho. I was the first child born and basically had no one to help me speak english. Since I was only three years old at the time I strongly remember watching cartoons and soon after I miraculously knew how to speak english. At an early age, I didn’t understand the concept of an immigrant family and that our resources were very limited. It wasn’t until I got older, that I finally understood and recognized the struggle that my family went and still continues to go through. My realization began when I was about 11-years old and I noticed that my father not only worked for his own small gardening service, but that he also took my older brothers to work with him. I knew it was a time for serious measures because my brothers started helping my father when they were close to my age, and they continued throughout their whole school years. Everything was going normal in my family then, we rented a house that was in the name of my aunt, had enough money for the bills,…

    J. R. R. Tolkien wrote, “All that is gold does not glitter, Not all those who wander are lost; The old that is strong does not wither, Deep roots are not reached by the frost.” Living in the moment and pursuing your dreams are undoubtedly essential parts of enjoying life; however, it is equally as important to stick to your roots and appreciate where you came from, where you obtained your intellectual curiosities, and where you predestined your goals and aspirations. I grew up in a very close-knit family surrounded by the hills of suburban Fullerton in Southern California. By no means was this a harsh environment to live in mentally or physically, in fact, I loved almost everything about my city; the cool weather, the delicious restaurants, and the alluring people had always made me feel blessed. My father worked hard to settle his painting business and my mother had just started her job as a bank accountant; and as far as I could tell, my family was very close to achieving— to some degree— the fabled ‘American Dream’.…

Growing up I faced many obstacles coming from an immigrant family. Never did I think I could overcome the obstacles and say that the little girl who went to one of the worst rated elementary schools in the area was now a rising senior at George Mason University. I grew up with both my parents and three sisters, and in my eyes we were an average “normal” family. I never saw my parents struggle or felt like I was missing anything, and not until I was older did I understand our situation. I did not fully grasp that my parents were “different” because they were immigrants until I realized they could not help me with my homework, engage in a conversation with my teachers, nor participate in all the things my classmates parents did.…

Coming to America was a terrifying and uncertain journey for my parents, who came to the United States as young adults. Despite the dangers, it was a risk that they were willing to take to ensure their family with a better future. As children, my siblings and I were told stories of what our parents had to endure while growing up in Mexico and what was required of them from a young age. Throughout the years, they taught us to aim for the impossible and not to settle for less than what we had the potential to accomplish. They constantly reminded us of the opportunities that we had being raised in the U.S. and taught us the value of working hard to dedicating ourselves achieve our goals.…

The Long Hallway At the age of five, my mother left home to immigrate to another country; she has won a DV (Diversity Visa) lottery to live in United State. My grandparents were both sad then happy that they have to let their daughter live in another country even though she will be presented with numerous opportunities. When we arrived to airport, I remembered walking through a long stretch hallway back and forth, while pacing myself to find the correct gate for departure.
