But there was also the Civil rights act put in place during the reconstruction which was put in place to protect the rights of the African American people. With the many negatives that Allensworth and many other African Americans had to go through during this time there was still positives and some other positives that also came out of this time would also be a lot of people who supported African Americans and also there was blacks being put in higher positions. For example, Benjamin Butler, notorious Union General in the Civil War and advocate of rights for African Americans was elected to Congress as a radical member of the Republican party. There was also a former slave named Oscar J. Dunn who was elected lieutenant governor of Louisiana. Also in 1870 Hiram Revels was elected to U. S. Senate as the first black senator. Now even though African Americans were being able to get in to the U.S. Senate, the congress, or any type of government, and even though there were people in America who was supporting African Americans with getting their rights and making their life better there still was some hostility that African Americans had to go through after the reconstruction …show more content…
Also during this time, he also lectures in Boston. While leaving where he was at he met people from the American Baptist publication society in Philadelphia. The people he met soon appointed him to Sunday school missionary for the state of Kentucky. For the colored people their churches appointed Allensworth to State Sunday school superintendent. Allensworth has been appointed to many leadership positions and has had given many speeches during this time, and with him doing this he soon wanted to become involved in politics.
