Alice Monologue

Twice this year I near froze to death. Both times Alice Mayweather kept me warm. The first time I locked myself out of my house, frost creeping on the windows, I called Alice over, she was always good with these things. Ever since we were kids she had always been saving me from the trouble I got myself into. I sat shivering on my steps, watching the snow pile up on the ground at least two feet high. Comfortable silence floated around me as the sun set with pink sky as it’s backdrop. A few minutes later Alice arrived, toolbox in hand, as she ascended the steps she wrapped her coat around me with a smile and then went to work on the door to try and budge it open. The smell of popcorn and sticky sweet freeze-e’s filled the air. As the line shortened and we finally got a chance to order the lobby had cleared out significantly, there was room to move without worrying about hitting someone.

After a while of searching we finally found two seats next to each other, middle of the row and skewed to the left. The lights went dark as the screen lit up with a “Please silence your cellphones” cue card. The popcorn started to burn my legs through the bag, I always forgot how hot the popcorn got. Just as it started burning Alice picked it up and placed it on the floor. I smiled but it quickly faded as my hand bumped against hers on the small arm rest. Memories rushing back of every time I’d locked myself out of something and nearly froze to death and every time Alice had saved me, and here we were on a date. I tapped the fingers of my other hand against my leg. I bit my lip and laced my fingers between hers. She didn’t have to walk me through things
