In Alexie Sherman’s article The Joy of Writing: Superman and Me, the author talks about life living in an Indian reservation and how he learned to read by a superman comic book. By reading the superman comic book, he found enjoyment in reading. After the superman comic book, the author moved on to more complicated readings. Sherman’s father brought new books home almost everyday. Since the author adores his father, he decided to read what his father likes to read which were westerns, spy thrillers, murder mysteries, gangster epics, and basketball biographies. By the time he was in kindergarten, he was reading Grapes of Wrath when other kids are struggling with other simple readings. Comic books soon became big part of many children’s thinking, daily activities etc. In the article The effects of Comic Books on the Ideology of Children, authors Lauretta Bender and Reginald S. Lourie investigate the effects of comic books on children and how comic books can be accepted by parents or educators. This article includes real life cases of children who actively read comic books. Like this one about an eleven year old boy who has an unstable mother and an alcoholic father. After his parents separated, he was forced to live in an unsupervised foster home. After that, he was sent back to his mother who was very unwilling to raise him. The boy was sexually assaulted by an adult and he was sent to the hospital. Both psychological and medical treatments don’t do much good for the kid. However, he was happy and relaxed when he was wearing a Superman cape. Through Superman, the boy found temporary peace. To other normal children, the Superman cape can just be the power to fly, but for the boy, the cape gave him a sense of security. A comic book can have many different interpretations, it depends on who is reading it. To many children, comic books are just fun and entertaining. But for many others, comic books are more than that. For many children, reading comic books help them to cope with their problems in life and give them hope.
