Chicago's gang war reached its bloody climax in the so-called St. Valentine's Day massacre of 1929. During the massacre some 70 rounds of ammunition was fired. (History.com staff st.). Capone started the massacre when he tried to eliminate a rival gang leader Bugs Moran, Capone’s number one enemy. Bugs Moran had an attempted assassination, he made it out alive but most of his men were killed. The public and the media immediately blamed Capone for the massacre, he was named public enemy number one (History.com staff St.) George “Bugs” Moran was on his way to the garage in Chicago at the time of the St. Valentine's Day massacre; he missed getting killed by minutes (History.com staff St.). The victims of the St. Valentine Day massacre include five of Moran's criminal associates along with a mechanic who worked for Moran and an optometrist who hung around with the group; Moran himself wasn't there.
