The HAWK surface to air missile system was deployed in the same time frame as the T141 “Duster,” which assisted in covering the low altitude engagements that the HAWK was less capable of performing. These systems were focused mainly along the European theater to counter the formidable Red Army Air Force, however, several units “Dusters” were deployed to the Republic of South Vietnam and inevitably found themselves supporting ground forces again as they had in Korea. By the end of the Vietnam conflict, the US was well on its way to streamlining its Air Defense systems and introduce more mobile Air Defense platforms in the form of the M163 Vulcan and M68 Chaparral air defense systems. It was towards the end of the Vietnam conflict in the mid 1970’s that the US began developing what was to become what we know as modern air defense weapon systems and further showcasing the ever evolving nature of air defense weapons systems.
