The term “serial killer” is presumed to have been coined by the late FBI agent and profiler Robert Ressler in 1974 after he heard about series of crimes occurring in England at the time. However, despite this, serial killings had been occurring long before this, simply being called mass murders. The number of classified serial killers worldwide since 1980 is 154 with 87 being in the United States and the number of active serial killers at any given time in the U.S. is approximately 35. history is the case of Aileen Wuornos. . Aileen was born to a psychopathic, child molester father who committed suicide and a mother who soon abandoned her. She was adopted by her grandfather who sexually abused her and she also developed a sexual relationship with her brother. At nine years old, she began engaging in sexual activities at school in exchange for drugs and food, and she became pregnant at fourteen but her baby was given up for adoption. Eventually, after grandmother died, she was thrown out by her grandfather and she started working as a prostitute to survive. From late 1989 through late 1990, the bodies of seven middle-aged white men were discovered in central Florida. They had all been robbed and shot to death with their cars stolen.
