He/she has to or have already gone through a quest that completely changes the protagonists perceptions to which in these stories creates a "hero". Unparalleled in his ability to prey upon the insecurities of those he wishes to ruin, Iago is one of Shakespeare’s most destructive villains. He plants the seeds to destructive plots that are aimed to exploit the fundamental nature of other characters. With his use of garden metaphors throughout the play, Iago exhibits his effectiveness as a villain in being able to nurture and manipulate the tangled roots of human nature Throughout the play, Iago views the other characters through the lens that they are all wild plants, and that he, as a gardener, will bring under his control. Early in the play, while starting his plans to bring about Othello’s downfall, Iago tells Roderigo that, “Our bodies are our gardens, to which the wills are gardeners”…

However, he is twisted psychologically by his vengeful officer Iago. By keeping multiple people isolated from others, Iago is capable of bending them to his will throughout the course of the play. This is not only a device of storytelling made for Othello, but a warning that when used effectively, isolation could be used to disastrous results. While it is not the first time Iago can be seen alone with someone, the first time he is truly seen using his abilities in manipulation and suggestion is when he warns Montano that he needs to closely watch the now drunken Cassio, saying…

Should gender stop someone from being who they want to be? During the early seventeenth century, many social barriers prevented people from being themselves, such as remaining the gender they were born with throughout their whole life. Any movement and straying from their gender, based on their biological sex, was not acceptable and was looked down upon. Societal structure and law made very clear that biological sex must be the same as sexual orientation. However, in the play Twelfth Night, or What You Will, Shakespeare creates Viola to manipulate gender ambiguities that allow her to express her true feelings and emotions to ultimately prove that gender is irrelevant in a relationship.…
