What is the effect of surface area on volume ratio over rate of diffusion of pigment regarding the agar cube, measure by percentage volume of diffusion through time?
Hypothesis
The experiment involves the use of agar cubes. If the cells of these cubes desire a great surface area to volume ratio in order to carry out their needs (exchanging materials with the environment, receiving oxygen, getting rid of waste products), the SA:V ratio will be larger. Consequently, the rate of diffusion of pigment from the agar cube calculated by the finding the percentage volume of diffusion over time will be greater
Background Information
Diffusion is the “tendency of molecules to spread into an available space” . Without the existence of …show more content…
The more precisely the cubes can be cut, the better Spill 96 cm3 of water in the beaker Add 4 grams of the NaOH solution in the beaker that contains the water Put the four agar cubes into the solution Turn on the timer as soon as the cubes are in the beaker Do not take out the cubes for the following 10 minutes. In the meanwhile, observe the temperature Once the 10 minute has been reached, take out the 4 cubes using a spoon and place them on the petri dish After ensuring that no sodium hydroxide has been left on the cubes, cut all 4 of them in half and keep record of the measurements
Data Collection
In order to keep track of all the collected data, the following table will be utilized. Please note that even though the materials and procedure written above are based on one trial for each of the four cubes, I personally did 5 trials for each cube size in order to obtain a wide variety of results and enrich my experiment. Therefore, I used 20 agar cubes, which is otherwise not necessary to carry out the
