The conflict between the black and the white came into existence many decades before. During the adapting process of the black people, there are many obstacles. Just like the song appearing many times in this play, both indicates the difficulties the black people are faced with and their determination to overcome the hardships. The black folks try their best to fit the American society, and to realize their American Dream. Here the American Dream I think is different from that of 1920s in The Great Gatsby. This American Dream is a specific dream for the black people in America, in which they are eager to get out of their original life and gain social status and money. Roosevelt is one of these people. He wants to grab every possible chance to get rid of the disadvantages and low position the blacks have in the American society. The two sides are represented by Harmond and Sterling, and Roosevelt. Harmond and Sterling think that people should know right and wrong. They both consider that others have no right to sell or demolish Old Joe’s house without Old Joe’s permission. It is against the law. So Sterling criticized Harmond at first and then Harmond decides to cancel the demolition and make some adjustments to the rendering of the project. But what they have done is regarded ridiculous and stupid by Roosevelt. In his opinion, money values most. He will never let something that may harms his profits happen. So he tries his best to stop Harmond to cancel the demolition and rearrange the demolition after Harmond has already canceled
