Reparation- : according to Meriam Webster- something that is done or given as a way of correcting a mistake that you have made or a bad situation that you have caused
Argument 1 - America ended slavery over 150 years ago and there is minimal information to link slavery to the reason why the majority of African Americans are in economic trouble as of today. Even if the African Americans had it the worst, the fact that many other races that were mistreated or enslaved have jumped back up to a good economic condition. In WW2, the Italian and the Japanese were forced into internment camps and had, many pieces of their property confiscated and sold by the Americans in WW2. Many holocaust survivor relatives reside in America today and …show more content…
- Say Billy gets into a car accident with Sally. In this situation, we know who is at fault, its Billy. Considering how badly damaged the car is, how much the car costs, the medical condition that Sally is, we can determine how much Billy owes Sally. Now with reparations how would we be able to sort out the mess and determine who is at fault in that case? Depending on what numbers you believe, about 80-95% of Americans never owned slaves at all, and there were several thousand Black Americans who owned slaves also. In addition, why would a Northerner who hated slavery but fought in the Civil War have to pay reparations just because he was on the other side of the argument? In addition, why would we hold people responsible for something that their ancestors over 150 years ago? Holding people who did nothing wrong for something that their ancestors did over 15 decades ago would not solve anything nor make it right for the family of people who used to be slaves. The governments also a big part in this since we are already over 18 trillion in debt according to the nationdebtclock.org The government is also providing over 40 percent of African Americans with social security benefits, Medicare and welfare from the government. In total, the United States government debt totals to over 950 billion dollars and 880 billion dollars for social security. Since there are no living slaves at the moment it would be impossible to compensate the people who had been mistreated. In addition why would we pay African Americans in general using the theory that what American had done to the slaves has held them back in any sort of way? Blaming the economic problems someone has today because of something that happened over a century and a half ago is just ridiculous. But let’s consider the fact we end up paying reparations for whatever reason. Say someone like Barack Obama, he is of a mixed heritage. Would he have to pay reparations to himself? Say a black immigrant came to the U.S. 10 years ago; would he receive reparations because of his skin color? What about rich famous people such as Michael Jordan or Oprah, would they also receive reparations disregarding the fact they have no need for it and that money could be used for better things? This excess money could be used for other things such as raising awareness for racism that still goes on today unlike slavery, which has been abolished for exactly 165 years. In addition, what if we give them the money that is using the wrong solution. If were focusing on paying them because that is going to fix the problem that is the wrong issue. Also keep in mind that Germany payed reparations to Jews and to Israel, and because of this their economy dropped tremendously. Germany ended up paying so much in reparations that they kept printing money and it
