This procedure outlines the administration of aerosolized Pentamidine.
II. INDICATION
Aerosolized Pentamidine is used prophylactically to reduce the incidence of infection Pneumocystis Carinii Pneumonia (PCP) among patients that are immunocompromised.
III. CONTRAINDICATION
Patients with known allergies to Pentamidine and other ingredients found in the solution.
IV. PRECAUTIONS
A. Premedication:
A bronchodilator, such as Albuterol, must be given 15 minutes prior to administering Pentamidine to avoid the risk of bronchospasm and improve Pentamidine’s lung deposition.
B. Solution Preservation:
1. Nebulized Pentamidine must NOT be mixed with other nebulizer.
2. Reconstituted Pentamidine solution must be protected from light and may be stored for 48 hours. However, the manufacturer recommends freshly prepared solution for inhalation. …show more content…
Reduction of Staff & Nonclinical Caregivers (Guardians, Relatives or Visitors) exposure:
1. Protective personal equipment (PPE) required during the treatment are as follows: glove, gown and N95 mask. These protective personal equipment (PPE) is not optional and must be worn at all times. The listed PPE’s applies to the assigned staff and assisting nonclinical caregiver such as guardians, relatives or visitors.
2. Treatment Room Setting:
• Aerosolized Pentamidine is required to be given in a setting where nebulized particulate can be filtered. Portable systems such as the Demistifier Airlifter Tent may be used in the absence of a negative pressure rooms. However, if the patient has tuberculosis, a negative pressure room is required.
