Lee and the Union under George McClellan. McClellan however, had a flaw he overestimated Lee and was far too cautious. The Emancipation prevented the alliance with England for the CSA. McClellan slipped and allowed for Lee to escape after he made a mistake. McClellan was then replaced by Burnside. Robert E. Lee was able to gain a victory in the Battle of Chancellorsville, with the aid of Stonewall Jackson who died in battle. This did not stop Lee from trying to gain Gettysburg which lasted three days. This battle almost destroyed the CSA. On the other hand the Union Army was able to capture Vicksburg, but was attacked in Chattanooga forcing Grant to lead and effort to help. He slowly gained control of the city and did not let it return to the CSA. This fort was one of the CSA’s with loads of protection and guards. After the CSA tried to send reinforcements the Grant was able to once again move them out. This gave the Union the rest of the control of the Mississippi River. This victory allowed for Lincoln to gain the people’s favor again by electing Grant as overall commander of the military. Sherman for his destruction of Savannah and Atlanta was commander of the Army of Tennessee. This attack allowed for the North to once again be on the bandwagon to finish the war.
