Adnan Guilty Case Study

Improved Essays
On the day of January 13, 1999 something strange happened. A girl by the name of Hae Min Lee was murdered. Her ex-boyfriend Adnan Syed was convicted of the murder. Adnan went on trial, but it ended quick as the judge already declared him guilty of the murder. Adnan says that he is innocent and and a lot of people from Woodlawn High School say that he was a good student and a star athlete. Adnan has been in jail ever since, but in the podcast Serial Sarah koenig a detective has been gathering all the information possible to crack the case. There is a lot of evidence that proves that Adnan is guilty and a lot to prove that he is innocent. The question is, is Adnan guilty or innocent? The way that the evidence adds up it proves that Adnan is guilty because of his bad character, evidence from his friend Jay who was there on the scene, and how he changed his story. For instance, Adnan could possible be guilty because of his and character. In the podcast Sarah Koenig displays the fact that adnan was dishonest by telling the audience that Adnan's parents did not know about the bad things he was doing outside of home such as smoking weed. “His family did not know that he drank,he smoked, he was having sex.” (E.1 P.9). This states that Adnan was not honest with his parents, and was not following the rules to his religion. Someone who is not honest can be lying, therefore, Adnan can potentially be lying about his story and be guilty. Furthermore, the text says, “Jay sold weed, and he and Adnan smoked together.” (E.1 P.9). This proves that Jay was not a good friend. People who are surrounded by bad friends tend to get into a lot of trouble. Hence, Adnan’s bad character and Jay's bad influence as a friend could have been the reason to Hae Min Lee’s death. More importantly, Jay told the detective about what he saw and what Adnan had told him during the call. The text says, “All I can see is Hae’s lips are all blue and she’s all pretzeled up in the back of the trunk and she’s dead. Usually someone remembers a day because of something unique that could have happened. Jay remembers that day vividly because he saw Hae’s dead body,Therefore, he can't he lying.. The text also says, “That girl is dead. Come get me. I’m at best buy.” (E.1 P.9). Furthermore, Adnan …show more content…
It says, “my boyfriend and his best friend remember seeing you there, too.” (E.1,P.17). Thiscan’t be true because according to Becky, Adnan asked Hae for a ride which proves that Adnan was not in the library at the time of Hae’s murder. “I remember it felt like he asked her to give him a--give him a ride somewhere.”(E.2,P.40).
To conclude, Adnan is guilty and not innocent for the murder of Hae Min Lee. A factor that makes Adnan guilty is his bad character because outside of his home he was involved in a lot of bad things that are forbidden from his religion and he never told his parents. Also, his friend Jay was a witness and saw Hae’s dead body when he went to pick up Adnan. More importantly, people from Adnan’s high school said that they remember Adnan asking and getting a ride from Hae after

Certainly the jurors thought it was a crime of passion, although the judge did not think it was not a good motive. Adnan was convicted of murdering Hae Min Lee,who is also, Adnan’s ex. Adnan still claimed to be innocent, but he remembered the day of the murder to be a “regular day.” Jay’s inconsistencies, Asia McClain’s letter, and Adnan’s reaction to his breakup with Hae are all pieces of evidence that help support that Adnan was wrongfully convicted for the murder of Hae Min Lee. Jay was a high school friend of Adnan’s that “witnessed” the alleged…

Even with all of this in mind, the court sees him as the main suspect and is not dissuaded by his normal persona. They pin him as Hae Min Lee’s killer by using the jealous boyfriend stereotype. Jay seems to be the only one that has a story that is sound enough to have Adnan as the main suspect.…

It is unusual that Adnan would not remember anything about this crucial day because he received a phone call from the police. He says he does “remember that phone call and [he does] remember being high at the time” but continues to deny remembering anything else because the day was “normal”, but, receiving a phone call from the police does not seem very normal and most people would remember the events leading up to it. There was one substantial detail that stood out to me about this day and it’s that Adnan got a call from Officer Adcock about Hae’s disappearance. Sarah Koenig asks Adnan, “would not the call from Officer Adcock make it not a normal day?” (Koenig, “The Case Against Adnan Syed”).…

From the beginning, the answer to “Who, What, When, Where, How and Why” not only becomes the centerpiece of the trial process, but also serves as an overview of the strategy and skills needed for the defense attorney and prosecutor to convince the jury of believing in, and finding their argument as the most convincing.
