People use technology everyday so the addiction is not as noticeable. In a news segment by CNN, titled“Addiction to our Electronic Gadgets.” there was a study at the University of Maryland where 200 student agreed to give up their electronic devices for a day and document how they felt. The students documented feeling similar to those of withdraw. Dr. Moore told CNN ,“They reported physical and mental states that would associate with people who are addicted” (CNN, 0:30). The constant need to be looking at a electronic screen is prevalent. The addiction with technology is the need for constant connection to virtual reality and the disconnection to actual reality and stresses of life. This occurs because technology provides a alternate reality to which a person could temporarily escape. “Intemet overuse has been proposed to be a form of behavioural addiction. ' In recent years, models of the Intemet and video gaming addiction have been developed based on knowledge regarding impulse control disorders, pathological gambling, and substance dependence disorders’” (Baer). Though technology links people together it can also act like a shield or place of refuge. People withdraw to their electronics devices and submerge themselves into a movie, television show, a video game and not have to deal with the stresses of life. Addictions are caused by the constant want of the pleasurable reactions in the brain. The reaction causes the constricting of blood vessels in the brain. When the blood vessels constrict that section of the brain is deficient in oxygen which, causes the neurons to fire more rapidly in the section receiving more oxygen to try to compensate. This causes the feeling of a rush or the feeling of being high. When someone was addicted to something the “prefrontal cortex were hyper, hyper, hyperactive addicts and were correlated with their cravings” (Piore) if the person was submitted into an environment containing the substance of which they were addicted.
