There are many things that in the beginning it seems difficult for me to adapt and understand. Until I immerse and embrace the American…
I agree with you on the fact that there is a contrast between mother and the father's point of view regarding adapting to a new culture. Reading through the text, it is quite evident that the father, Ralph, openly rejects the idea of adapting to the American culture. However, in the case of the mother, she is willing to adapt to the American culture by thinking the American way and joining the country club. But, I believe that the reason for this contrast you mentioned is due to the fact that both of them have had different experiences while blending with the American society. I believe, the father must have had an experience that must have negatively impacted his point of view towards the American culture.…
How Will An Individual Feel When They Have No Meaningful Relationships? Relationships can mean the world to some people and sometimes it even saves them from a life of darkness, whether the relationship is of a friendship, family or even a romantic bond, every relationship is special and meaningful to someone. Some individuals do not have the chance to form meaningful relationships and as a result they met be lost in a life filled with loneliness and sorrow, individuals may even develop a sense of hopelessness and may consider themselves trapped. In the poem To Keep One’s Treasure Protected by Stephan Dobyns we are confronted with an individual whom is upset with their life showing that they are lonely, and the reason being that they have…
I have interviewed two individuals, who came to the U.S. from other countries. The first person is Anzhelika or I. I moved to the America from Ukraine a few years ago. When I first came here, I did not feel confident in myself. My English was not good enough, as I thought, to use it for communication with other people. Even though, I liked almost everything about the United States.…
The school resides in a rural section of the district and holds a very small-town atmosphere. It is common for the teachers to know their students outside of the classroom and can often relate them to siblings, parents, and or other family members. Over the past few years the school that use to have a relatively conservative culture has shifted to more of a liberal culture. More students come from families with LGTB parents and the student body’s sexual orientation is more diverse. Although the school continues to maintain European-American background with over 94% of its student body being of European ancestry, shifting attendance boundaries, economic decline, and an increasingly transient population have seen a dramatic increase in the number…
My understanding of freedom has changed and deepened since the first days’ classes when taking notes on my individual freedom and societal freedom. Historical changes over time and specific events and developments such as the Colonial and Native American early period have fought, articulated, and transformed the freedom many have come to take as granted. Close to the start when Christopher Columbus "discovered" America in 1776, in reality his exploration lead to the conquest and colonization to land already home to millions of people. This did however begin a pivotal moment in history that affected the Old and New World, with changes that are still current today. Along with the conquest of land the differing views of the Indians and Europeans opened different contradictory interpretations about freedom especially within religion, land use, and government.…
America is a very liberal nation in terms of lifestyle. Although unique in its culture, some nations disapprove of the common way of life in the United States. There are many stereotypes about Americans that foreigners believe to be true. Other than the obvious difference in accent, their appearance and the way they carry themselves, Americans are known for being proud of their freedom and often boast about how they live in the best place on earth. Obesity is known to be a prominent issue in America and across the world.…
I came to America when I was a teenager and did not know any English. I felt strange and anxious at school and tried to fit in the new environment. The school system was totally different compared to where I came from. I did not know what to do but did not know how to get help. Every day in class, I was doing the math and only math.…

In America, there seems to be a macro-culture which exceeds overall, and in that overall culture there are micro-cultures that are being made. Culture is the beliefs, habits, views, or relations within a certain community that make up their lives. Ultimately, there are many growing cultures in America but they all possess qualities that are the similar and contain significance. Each culture in America is learned and not innate, adaptive, and mostly integrated. These aspects of American culture are all connected in some way and provide deeper meanings as to how culture is established between human beings.…
The piquant smell of palm oil and the sounds of Edo, a language native to the Edo people in southwestern Nigeria. These may seem like foreign quirks, but they were the everyday comforts of Nigerian culture to me. Of course, I have had my fair share of exposure to typical American culture as well- football, barbecues, and such- and while I do enjoy these moments, they still feel foreign to me. There is an awkwardness to it. As if American culture was a sort of ‘secondary culture' that I covered myself in whenever I was pushed out of my cultural comfort zone.…
Being as I’m made up of many races and ethnicities; my favorite one being Jamaican. It’s fair to say I’ve heard, and done plenty of research of the land of the Black, Green, and Gold. At the age of eight learning the whole Jamaican National Anthem, and citing it just about everyday since then. Knowing fun facts like the population of my dad’s hometown, Montego Bay, being 96,488 people. Also, people don't know Montego Bay wasn't considered a city until May 1st, 1981; seventeen years after my father was born.…
I have no idea about cultural anthropology until I took this class. I have comprehensive approach methods to the study Sudanese immigrant’s struggles that lived in the United States of America, particularly in the State of Missouri. The methods I used as follow: 1. Describe questions such as could you tell me what you do to adopt or assimilate into a new culture? Or could you describe the way you adopt or assimilate into a new culture?…
There are so many different cultures in the world from Japanese cultures, to Chinese cultures, to even our very own American cultures. I will talk about American culture, even though there are many sub-cultures in the American culture I will try to narrow it down. American cultures for us is the normal things we do; we tend to think that everyone does the same things that we do in our everyday life. For example, from driving on the right side of the road to even eating with forks and knives. Everyone’s culture is so different, and we usually sit and judge others cultures without knowing about them.…
Being able to study in the United States is really a great opportunity that I have ever experienced. Since many international students have value the importance of studying overseas, especially in the States, I learned much knowledge of how others’ culture tends to work. Besides from housing numerous kind of esteemed places for learning, America also is a place that cultural exchanges is apt to happen among the locals and international students. Based on my experience, there are some differences and similarities of how my culture views time as compared to American. First and foremost, back in my home country, I used to do one thing at a time.…
