“As a leader, you serve others through leadership. But you must be aware of your own fundamental beliefs and values before you can empathize with others” (PSU, 2017. P3.) Self-awareness describes the internal process of understanding of your personal strengths, weakness, values, emotional state, etc… To improve your self-awareness, self-discovery an introspective are critical to the process. This week’s online lesson included a link to an “Active Listening Skills Inventory” assessment, which is a useful tool for self-discovery. There are two categories of self-awareness, trait awareness and task awareness. Trait awareness refers beliefs, values, philosophies, etc… Task awareness refers to the activities leaders engage in. My score was an eight from a zero to nine scale, which falls to the high range. The report said, “People with high scores on this dimension have a strong tendency to actively organize the speaker's ideas into meaningful categories” (McShane, 2009.).
The final area in the report was Showing Interest; my score was an eight from a zero to nine scale, which falls to the high range. The provide feedback stated, “People with high scores on this dimension have a strong tendency to use nonverbal gestures or brief verbal acknowledgements to demonstrate that they are paying attention to the speaker” (McShane, 2009.).
The overall score of the report simple entitled, Active Listening (total) is based on a range from 0–45. I scored a 33 which falls in the ‘good active listening’ range. This shows me that I have fairly good active listening skills, but based on my previous comments regarding the variance in my behavior at home verse at work, I know I need to work on improving my integrated self as it relates to active listening. This has been an insightful lesson and
